OPERA Nova is based in the Tees Valley and performs throughout the region.

Musical director Richard Bloodworth is rehearsing the 2018 programme which will feature opera, musical theatre and film music.

The opening concert for the summer season, Feuds, Family and Friendships, takes place at Stokesley Town Hall on Saturday, May 5.

Jealousy, infidelity, sibling rivalry and parental hostility feature in this new, semi-staged production.

Using only a minimum of props and simple costumes, the company will recreate scenes as varied as Bernstein’s West Side Story and Wagner’s Ride of the Valkyries, from Gilbert and Sullivan’s HMS Pinafore to Verdi’s Rigoletto.

Famous film music such as Gabriel’s Oboe (from the film The Mission) will be presented, alongside enduring opera favourites such as Bizet’s Pearl Fishers Duet, the Easter Hymn from Mascagni’s Cavalleria Rusticana and many more. Sung mainly in English, the concert seems to contain something for everyone.

“We always enjoy performing in Stokesley Town Hall,” said Sue Grogan, chairwoman of Opera Nova. “It’s a lovely venue and the audience is so appreciative.”

The performance starts at 7.30pm. Tickets cost £12 for adults, students and under-16s £1. Tickets can be obtained in advance by phoning 01642 807033 or 07872 339167. Any remaining tickets will be available on the night.
