AWARDS were given out to several first time artists who exhibited their work recently.

For The Power of 3 exhibition, younger and older novice artists were invited to display creative efforts combining the elements of paint, mixed media, photography or video.

The display at the Old School House, Leyburn, attracted more than 30 entries of which a third were from young people. Their designs ranged from watercolours, sheep fleeces to Manga cartoons – Japanese-style comic characters – and photographs.

An open evening saw the artists, their friends and families gather to judge the best of the works that encompassed the aims of the display. The final results were decided by the non-scientific method of a clapometer with the judge Howard Firth’s word final.

Robert Austin took the watercolour award for his Pi in the Sky which used the Greek symbol as its theme; U3A artist David Spachett also won with an impression of his father.

The art work that made the greatest impression was Christopher Houghton’s from Middleton St George with his photographic depiction of the life cycle of daffodils.

After the presentation entrants enjoyed a drink and a piece of a specially-made cake.

Power of 3 exhibition continues at the Leyburn Arts Centre until May 11.
