A SURPRISE parcel was delivered to the Ripon Cathedral office in the form of a large painting of the cathedral.

It has been donated by former resident Charles Hunter Pease, now living in Oxford, and will be on show in Ripon Cathedral in the Frame which opens on Thursday, May 24.

“The painting was presented to me in 1981 when I was regional manager for Volvo based in Harrogate, hence the inclusion of the vehicle," he said. "Returning it to the location where it was painted will I hope ensure it finds a worthwhile home.”

The painting is signed Virginia 81. The artist is unknown and anyone who recognises the name is welcome to get in touch with the cathedral.

It is hoped others will donate original works depicting the cathedral or local area to be sold at affordable prices, giving everyone the opportunity to buy a piece of history and help preserve the future of Ripon Cathedral.

The development campaign renewal project includes plans for a restaurant, cafe and visitor facilities.

The preview night of Ripon Cathedral in the Frame is on Thursday, May 24. The exhibition runs from May 25, to Sunday, June 3.
