ORGANISERS of an exhibition on the life of a well-known Dales artist are asking for the public’s help.

For more than 50 years, Fred Lawson was a feature of the Wensleydale landscape, often found with his paint box and easel capturing the ever changing seasons and light of the dales.

To mark the 50th anniversary of his death in 1968, Tennants Garden Rooms at Leyburn will stage an exhibition of his work.

It will bring together about 50 works loaned by local collectors, celebrating Lawson’s evocative images of the Dales and beyond.

His work is still as much in demand today, as it was in the early 20th century.

Harriet Hunter-Smart, exhibition co-ordinator, said: “We are looking for interesting ephemera in connection with the artist, such as photos or anecdotes about meeting him.”

Jane Sellers, curator of the Mercer Gallery, Harrogate, will open the exhibition on March 24.

Among those attending will be John Duncalfe, who recently wrote the much-admired biography of Lawson – A Painter’s Life.

The public are invited to an afternoon viewing on the first day of the exhibition, with tea and coffee, from 2-4pm; the official opening takes place at 3pm. Admission is free. Book via info@tennantsgardenrooms.com or 01969 621146.

Anyone with items for loan should contact Ms Hunter-Smart. The exhibition runs from March 24 until April 15.
