RIPON Choral Society is to perform in New York with other choirs in the world premiere of a newly-commissioned work by Sir Karl Jenkins.

Last month the choir performed The Armed Man by Karl Jenkins to a packed Ripon Cathedral which helped in the selection process.

Dr Jonathan Griffith, artistic director conductor for Distinguished Concerts International New York City, said: “The society received the invitation because of the quality and high level of musicianship demonstrated by the singers.

"These wonderful musicians not only represent a high quality of music and education, but also become ambassadors for the entire community. "

The performance will take place at Carnegie Hall on Monday, January 15.

It is the first time Ripon Choral Society has been invited to join such a venture.

Conductor John Dunford is unable to make the trip, but 21 members are feeling very excited and looking forward to the experience. Intense rehearsals are under way and will continue over Christmas.

The work, Sing! The Music was Given, is a celebration of music and of singing with eight movements and lyrics drawn from Europea, Asia and Africa. One of its most challenging movements contains a high speed tongue twister.

The mood is upbeat, sometimes reflective, and fun to sing.

Said Mr Dunford: "The invitation to sing two pieces under the direction of the composer, Karl Jenkins, is a unique and exciting opportunity for members of Ripon Choral Society.

"Members will be able to share new insights into his music on their return and will have gained an unforgettable experience singing in a massed choir in one of the great venues of the world."
