THE 2017 series of Wensleydale Concert starts tomorrow in Bainbridge with a performance of two new works by violinist Fenella Humphreys.

In Bach 2 the Future, the project she began in 2014, six new works were commissioned for solo violin, each inspired by or designed to complement in concert one of the six partitas and sonatas by J S Bach.

The project culminated in two CDs of solo violin music, both of which received five-star reviews by BBC Music Magazine and were named instrumental recording of the month.

Two of these new works feature in tomorrow's programme. One is among the last works written by Sir Peter Maxwell Davies which she performed for him at the St Magnus Festival in Orkney shortly before his death.

The other is by Cheryl Frances-Hoad. Also in the programme are works by Bach, Kreisler, Paganini and Ysaye.

The concert starts at 7.30pm in the Friends' Meeting House in Bainbridge.

The Eight concerts between February and October include piano recitals, a piano concerto with orchestra, two solo recitals for violin and cello, and an early music group playing on period instruments.

The international Swedish cellist Mats Lidstrom and his son Leif will perform in June. The former has played all over the world, given premieres of major works and performed with many of the best orchestras and conductors.

He is a prolific recording artist, most recently a number of CDs with Vladimir Ashkenazy. He is also professor of cello at the Royal Academy of Music in London.
