OWING to circumstances beyond their control this Darlington Music Society recital had to be transferred from the usual venue.

On the whole it was a satisfactory switch, though it was unfortunate the central heating upgrade hasn’t yet reached this part of the college.

The young duo opened with Mozart’s Sonata for violin and piano, No. 21 (replacing the advertised Beethoven Sonata) with the instruments nicely balanced and some fine dynamic control in the second movement.

Although Schubert’s Rondo in B minor, D895 is little known it proved to be a fine, dramatic piece which built effectively to a splendid conclusion.

Even better was Ysaye’s splendid Sonata No. 2 for solo violin, wonderfully virtuosic but carefully structured and played very confidently by Savriti Grier.

Its four movements (not the two listed in the programme) were very contrasting but always cohesive in a fine showcase.

Jean-Sélim Abdelmoula opened the second set with the first three movements of Schubert’s Moments Musicaux, D780, the first rather careful and measured, the second thoughtful (and beautifully played) and the brief third one very cheerful and catchy.

The two players then performed Ravel’s rather different Sonata for violin and piano, No. 2 which particularly came to life during some lovely singing passages in the opening movement.

The society returns to Central Hall for the next recital with pianist Riyad Nicolas playing Bach, Chopin, Scarlatti, Ravel and Beethoven on Saturday, January 21. Tickets from 01325 467163.
