The St Cecilia Orchestra under the baton of founder and conductor Xen Kelsey performs in Holy Trinity Church, Ripon, on Saturday, June 25.

The programme includes two pieces by Richard Strauss and two by Mozart.

Both Strauss pieces are late works, written towards the end of the Second World War. The Wind Symphony is sometimes referred to as a posthumous publication, though Strauss was present at its premiere in 1946.

His Metamorphosen for 23 solo strings was a commission from Basel Chamber Orchestra. The theme was seen as an elegy for Germany's defeat and destruction.

Mozart's Symphony No 29 in A major is one of his best loved works. Written in 1774 when he was barely 18, its chamber style is ideally suited to the intimate surroundings of Holy Trinity.

The highlight of the evening will be a performance of Mozart's Horn Concerto No 4. The sparkling rondo finale is one of Mozart's best known tunes.

The soloist is the award-winning Joel Roberts, one of the finest young horn players of his generation. He has played with the St Cecilia several times but this is his first solo appearance.

Tickets are available from 01765 677413, The Little Ripon Bookshop or at the door, concessions available.
