GUISBOROUGH artist Andrew Barlow, 83, has been elected a full member of the Royal Society of Miniature Painters, Sculptors and Gravers after submitting six entries for the 2015 annual exhibition at the Mall Galleries London, in October.

Entries are by committee selection, and it was his sixth year of submitting his finely detailed watercolours for the RMS exhibitions.

Internationally the society has 80 full members, which reflects the honour bestowed on Mr Barlow.

Election to full membership entails the presentation of a diploma certificate and the entitlement to include the letters RMS after the artist’s name with related work.

Mr Barlow is proud of his achievement and the honour, particularly as he is a retired engineer. Apart from having excellent art tutors at school and a distinguished engineering father who could also draw and paint, he is mainly self-taught.

He has been accepted by and is listed in Who’s Who in Art 34th edition and exhibits annually with Leven Art Society in Stokesley, where he has been a member for many years.

Since retiring 20 years ago, Mr Barlow has tutored up to four popular watercolour painting classes, including the City and Guilds certificate and NCFE certificate courses at local colleges.

He taught at evening classes at Prior Pursglove College for seven years and at Askham Bryan College. Anyone interested in acquiring watercolour painting skills can contact him on 01287 632291 for details of this year's class. Beginners as well as experienced painters are welcome.

Mr Barlow said: “I’ve good eyesight, a steady hand and patience. I really enjoy watercolour painting and I try and pass on whatever skills I have to budding artists. I run an art club and give lessons.”
