NEW works inspired by scenes in Yorkshire – including Redcar's ill-fated steel mill – will feature in James Mcgairy's annual winter exhibition on Friday, November 7, in Guisborough.

There will be new paintings, in which he continues to explore light and its interaction with the landscape, and limited edition prints.

Inspiration is found throughout Yorkshire from the Dales to the moors and coast.

"I have been painting more in the open air, including a work showing the blast furnace at Redcar, a thoroughly awesome structure, almost alive, now sadly extinguished – with immense clouds of steam, changing light incredible lines.

"I sat painting it for some hours. I sensed it almost breathing. I had no idea I was hearing the final breaths," said Mr McGairy.

The painting, now on show at Palace Art Gallery in Redcar, will be included in his winter exhibition.

He added: "2015 has been a busy year, with even more painting workshops and exhibitions, including at Danby Moors Centre and being an invited artist with the Fylingdales Group of Artists.

"I was also selected from over 1,000 entries to take part in Sky Arts Landscape Artist of the Year 2015, my submission painting depicting one of my favourite subjects, Staithes. My heat was at Waddesdon Manor and proved a nerve racking but enjoyable experience, given some four hours to produce an artwork."

The episode featuring his efforts was shown earlier this month.

The one-day winter exhibition takes place at Sunnyfield House, 36 Westgate, Guisborough, from 10am-4pm, with free admission. The artist can be followed on Twitter @JamesMcgairyart and on Facebook, James-McGairy-artist.
