AUDIENCES at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church hall in Northallerton and St Andrew’s Church at Aysgarth thoroughly appreciated the high quality concerts in informal settings presented by the Alverton Singers recently.
There was music for all tastes, ranging from medieval works to Schubert and from folk music to Enya. The concerts began with the female choir giving beautifully gentle and lilting renditions of Franck’s Panis Angelicus and Schubert’s Ave Maria, and ended with a jazz influenced setting of an Irish blessing.
The Singers, directed by Joan Foster and accompanied by Jean Pocock, performed with assurance, producing an extremely well blended and balanced sound.
The guest soloist for both concerts was Carole Lindsey, an accomplished soprano from Huddersfield. She was impressive throughout and entirely convincing in the popular opera arias, cabaret and show songs. She was accompanied by John Foster.
At Aysgarth, the audience was treated to a splendid afternoon tea by the choir.
Next year the choir will give a semi-staged performance of Gilbert and Sullivan’s Trial by Jury. It is also becoming increasingly in demand for wedding music.
