Spring Art Exhibition

Old School House, Leyburn

THIS is an eclectic and very enjoyable exhibition of work by several local artists and photographers.

“I wanted to show the diversity of all the artists we’ve had here during the last year, and we’ve had quite a big selection,” said Judith Clark, arts and events manager.

The exhibition is spread between the cafe bar and the studio and includes some memorable artwork.

The most fascinating is Barbara Braithwaite’s picture of Loch Fleet in Sunderland created out of fused glass. Like many of her paintings, this draws the spectator into a magical landscape where light predominates.

It contrasts well with atmospheric seascapes by Alan Lyman and the ebullient paintings by Moira Metcalfe inspired by the changing moods of the beautiful countryside around her home in Upper Wensleydale.

Judi Allison effectively uses wild flowers to take the viewer into that landscape from spring until autumn, while photographer David Tarn’s Morning Mist is a sepia portrait of a mellow, reflective beginning to a day.

This can be seen in the cafe bar and there are more of his photographs upstairs in the studio, where there is also a selection of prints created by members of the Wensleydale Camera Club. I especially liked that of a goose having a gander!

The exhibition includes artwork by Jenny Cathcart and Bill Oakey as well as members of Yoredale Art Club.

The exhibition continues until April 16 and can be viewed from 10am to 5pm, Monday to Saturday, and when films are being shown on Fridays.
