GRIEG is the main feature of a piano recital to be given by Ivana Gavric in Ripon Cathedral on Monday, February 9.

The composer is a particular speciality of the Sarajevo-born musician who moved to the UK as a teenager. Her recent recording of Grieg’s piano music was chosen as the Editor's choice in the Gramophone magazine in March 2014 and she has won lavish praise for her performances.

Brian Kealy, musical director, said: “She is building up a considerable following as an interpreter of Grieg’s piano music. The concert will include his lyrical Ballade, considered by many to be his finest work for piano, eclipsing even his popular piano concerto.”

The programme also includes four challenging Preludes by Rachmaninov and the moving Schubert A minor piano sonata, written when he was aware of his fatal illness and a broken man. It is full of richly expressed anguish and pathos.

Tickets are available from riponconcerts.co.uk, Alan’s Gallery, 19 Kirkgate, Ripon (01765 690498), Pomp & Circumstance in Harrogate or at the door.
