THIS is a must-see corker of a show, which leaves you feeling like you’ve just been to the best party in the world.

Presented by Bill Kenwright, Fame – The Musical wowed a near-capacity first-night audience with dizzying dance routines and memorable songs, set against a stunning stage backdrop of New York city at night.

The much-loved story about a group of teenagers following their dreams at the High School of Performing Arts is brought up to date, with iPads and mobile phones as much part of the students’ attire as baseball caps and ballet shoes.

In a stellar cast, Jodie Steele was all attitude and cropped tops as the sassy, talented but, ultimately, tragic Carmen, Omari Bernard (standing in as Tyrone) was mesmerising with his effortless on-the-money street moves, and Sarah Harlington was a delight as Serena with her moving rendition of Let’s Play a Love Scene.

The production deals with the perennial teenage issues of sex, drugs, class, body image and race, quite controversially at times, countered by some hilarious moments courtesy of Joseph Giancone as Joe Vegas – his performance of Can’t Keep It Down is quite something.

The show ended with the cast and audience on its feet singing hit song Fame.

Now in its 25th year, David de Silva’s creation still has the power to leave its audience jumping for joy.

There are performances tonight at 7.30pm and tomorrow at 2.30pm and 7.30pm. For details, call the box office on 01325 486555.
