THE story of how a German refugee, who was an internee and a jobbing journalist, came to be regarded as the Grand Old Man of English art history is the subject of next week’s lecture to Wensleydale Decorative and Fine Arts Society.

The answer lies in Sir Nikolaus Pevsner’s one-man survey of all the architecturally significant buildings in the country, county by county.

Lecturer Susie Harries, who recently published a biography of Pevsner, will explore his sometimes controversial views about churches, houses, shops, tower blocks, factories and cinemas.

It took him 25 years to research and write his first architectural guidebook, The Buildings of England, which ran to 46 volumes.

Tuesday’s lecture is at Middleham Key Centre, at 2pm, and is open to nonmembers, £6. Booking is essential on 01748-886545.
