IT’S all fairly quiet this week, other than the county council putting up signs saying you can’t park within 65 miles of the Tour de France route.

If you do park your car on a side road, you might be towed away, the signs say. Although with all the roads closed on the day it’s not clear where your car will be towed to.

I like to think cars will be towed away to the next car that needs towing and dumped, creating a giant Dales-wide game of hunt the car.

Your car might be a few feet away or a few miles, except for the last person who will have to pick it up from a pound in Scarborough.

With little else happening this week, I though I would list my top five household appliances in reverse order.

I know what you’re thinking – why am I reading this inane nonsense? Well you should count yourself lucky. If you have not already turned over to see who is ageing well in the Social and Personal pages, you will just read it once, while I have to read it numerous times to ensure it makes sense, or as much sense as it ever makes.

So without further ado – what a funny little word ado is. Is there ever less ado or lots of ado? Do we want to risk ado at the do dear? Doe a deer a female deer.

In fifth place we have the telephone.

Speaking to someone in another place using a banana shaped piece of plastic is pretty amazing when you think about it, which I do quite often.

In fourth place it has to be the electric shower. Water goes in cold and comes out really hot.

It blows my mind. The microwave takes minutes to make liquid really hot, but a shower does it instantly. Well done showers everywhere.

In third place we have the television. Many people’s favourite but getting a bit old hat.

Second it the washing machine.

No matter how much you cram in, clothes usually come out clean. Brilliant.

But in top spot it has to be the dishwasher. Our dishwasher broke once and it was like losing a pet, except a pet that did something really useful other than attack the baby.

Someone recently put a camera inside a dishwasher to see what happens. They found that hot water sprayed everywhere.
