A NEW exhibition opens at the Zillah Bell Gallery in Thirsk new exhibition next weekend showing work by artists who share studio space in South East London.

Creekside Eleven comprises work by a number of artists who practise at A.P.T Studios. The curator is Royal Academician Mali Morris, whose has her own studio there.

A.P.T came about 22 years ago when a group of artists moved into a former rag-sorting warehouse on Deptford Creek. They formed a charity called Art in Perpetuity Trust to promote creativity through the visual arts.

Now a thriving community, it houses 44 individual studios and a large gallery for exhibitions and educational projects.

Its annual open studios weekend is a popular event and the Creekside Open selected by eminent invited artists has become a well-known competition.

Mali Morris is an acclaimed Royal Academician whose work has been shown at the Whitechapel, Serpentine, Hayward and Barbican galleries in London as well as in New York and Tokyo.

The idea for the exhibition came about when John Bell, from the Zillah Bell Gallery, visited her studio.

He said: "I was enthralled by the atmosphere, by the breadth and excellence of the work, but most of all by the spirit of the building. Here artists concentrate on their own work but also share experiences and enthusiasms with their peers.

“This show will give art lovers in the North a rare opportunity to see a selection of very fresh, and affordable, work of national importance.”

Creekside Eleven runs from October 28 until November 18; For more details visit zillahbellgallery.co.uk.
