A COLLECTION of ingenious moving sculptures goes on display at Catterick Garrison this weekend.

Blinking Glass Eyes, Drumming Fingers and Beating Hearts: Marvellous Mechanicals which Surprise and Intrigue runs until mid-December at Catterick library. Entry is free.

The work is by five UK inventors, makers and tinkerers who all explore movement in their artworks.

Visitors are invited to interact with objects – by turning a handle, dropping a coin or just waving. Sculptures range from simple wooden automata to bespoke robotics.

I See You is a glass eye set in brass by Jim Bond which follows people around the room; The Potting Shed, carved by wood artist Lisa Slater, has a handle that makes a bird and mouse swirl; Fingers is a copy of mechanical sculptor Nik Ramage’s hand which impatiently drums its fingers.

Other works include The Cache Machine, a kinetic sculpture with a cams and levers activated by inserting a coin; Heart Beater, an alarming little machine designed to demand the attention of the one you love; and Mappings, an installation on the theme of scientific exploration, discovery, astronomy and creation of maps, charts and globes.

Said curator Grace Whowell: “These moving machines reveal their makers' interests which span the human body, the space around it and the passing of time.

"Our interactions with everyday objects, other humans and the animal world also provide inspiration, often with a good dose of humour thrown in.”

The exhibition is the first in a new series of Art Unpacked, a Chrysalis Arts project bringing high quality contemporary art and craft to small and unusual venues across North Yorkshire, East Lancashire and East Yorkshire.
