SPANISH art belonging to the Bowes Museum in Barnard Castle will take centre place in an exhibition in London.

The Wallace Collection will stage El Greco to Goya – Spanish Masterpieces from The Bowes Museum in September.

Spanning three centuries, the exhibition will explore one of the largest collections of Spanish art in the world, featuring paintings acquired by John and Josephine Bowes in the 1860s.

It also celebrates the partnership between the two museums, both products of a family’s obsession with collecting art.

Bowes Museum director, Adrian Jenkins, said: “As we mark 125 years since the creation of the museum, it is highly appropriate that the key works from this collection should be shared with London audiences, in keeping with John and Josephine Bowes’ belief that great art should be made accessible to all.”
