TEES Valley writer-in-residence Tracey Iceton is running a short story competition along with workshops and mentoring days to help aspiring writers improve their skills.

Entry in the competition is free and there are prizes to be won. Workshops, costing £3 each, include creating character, plotting stories, establishing narratives, structure, dialogue and descriptions.

“People can attend any session and we have tried to offer a spread of days and times so people can fit the sessions with other commitments," said Ms Iceton.

“Mentoring is a 45-minute slot with me as a follow up to reading their work, which I will critique and discuss with them.”

The competition and workshops are a spin-off from Crossing the Tees Book Festival which libraries including Stockton, Middlesbrough, Hartlepool and Darlington have run since 2014.

Closing date for the competition is September 30. Workshops continue throughout the summer. For details and entry forms, visit www.crossingthetees.org.
