THE spring programme at the Georgian Theatre Royal in Richmond opens with an adaptation of Charles Dickens' classic novel Great Expectations performed by the author's great-great-grandson.

Actor Gerald Dickens has turned the novel into a one-man show in which he plays all the colourful characters. It has had audiences cheering across the UK and earned great reviews. The performance is on January 31.

Shows in February include an inventive version of Mozart’s The Marriage of Figaro by OperaUpClose on February 7, directed by Sarah Tipple, who revived Anthony Minghella’s Madam Butterfly for ENO and delights audiences with her Barbershopera productions.

On February 27, Dame Emma Kirkby, queen of lute song, will be accompanied by Richmond lutenist Jacob Heringman and viol player Susanna Pell in English lute songs from the Golden Age. This talented trio are among the world’s finest performers of this repertoire.

February also sees the first of three entertaining shows for children, Hugless Douglas Live on Stage! on February 28, telling the story of a loveable young brown bear who wakes up one morning in need of a hug.
