TEESSIDE Music Society's 71st season is dedicated to the memory of its much respected chairman, Nat Smith, who organised concerts and performers for many years. He death occurred just before the new brochure was printed.

Julia Haigh, secretary, said: "His inspiration and energy has carried our society forward to this point. Nat worked with such incredible enthusiasm and commitment, establishing links with such a variety of professional musicians.

"His father Philip before him also served on our committee and Nat continued his work for our society for the past 50 years. Nat had already fixed the artists for this coming season before his death."

On Sunday, Sarah Beth Briggs will play Schubert's Piano Trio in B flat major, a piece chosen by Mr Smith and one of his personal favourites. She performs with her Trio Melz at Stokesley Methodist Church at the earlier time of 7.15pm.

The season continues with new and familiar artists and young local stars newly embarked on professional careers.

"It promises to be a great season, bringing refreshing youth, incredible talent, repertoire from baroque and classical through evocative romanticism, fiery show pieces, new commissions to intimate solo piano and solo guitar," said Ms Haigh.

Two concerts feature performers with roots in Teesside – Sarah Beaty (clarinet) and Sam Armstrong (piano), who played as a sixth form duo at St Bede’s (November 23); and Jonathan Parkin (guitar), who began his studies with John Forsyth, and has already delighted audiences in Stokesley and Hutton Rudby (February 8).

Daniel Grimwood gives a solo piano recital in December and two string quartets, Edinburgh and Villiers, bring a range of great string quartet repertoire.
