I might be accused of sounding like a stuck record but I don't recall Labour doing much about the A1 through Northumberland, or indeed any major transport infrastructure in the North East during their last term in office. They probably didn't feel the need to shore up their vote up here and spend money elswhere to bribe the more marginal electorate.

Loopy - for the umpteenth time - the banks helped to cause the 2008 crash, but some governments were running balanced budgets and managed to avoid the worst of the impact - like Canada and Australia. Others were running huge deficits and were hit hard. The UK and USA being two. If Brown had spent wisely during the good years the country would have had a cushion. It had nothing to do with the behaviour of governments David - and everything to do with banking concentration in major financial centres of the world.
Canada and Australia operate on the periphery of these centres so got off lighter. London is the biggest EU financial hub and got hit hardest, as did Wall St.

Family of tragic three-year-old, Danny Wake, thank community for their support
iPads, shoes, carvings, holidays to Florida, sounds like Darlington residents and donators have been had.
If the "fund raisers" have nothing to hide they would make a statement as to what monies have been raised, and what it has been spent on.
Unfortunately it sounds like it's not been setup as a registered charity, so they don't have to publish funds, however I'm pretty sure they should not be allowed to have collections in public places.
I wonder like many others how a 3 year old can be left to walk so far from a parent, how no one including the lads mother saw nothing, how a driver of the vehicle doesn't had him / herself in, or not know what's happened.
Lots of questions to answer but don't hold your breath for any statement from the group.
Feel sorry for the little lad, but can't help thinking someone has made a lot of money off of a tragic event.

'Would we be better off looking north to an independent Scotland or staying loyal to the union?'
Why on earth would the people of the North East want to be part of Scotland if it was independent - whatever problems we have now would be multiplied ten times over in a country which will have more than enough issues of its own to deal with.
Nonsense statement from someone who should know better.

David nobody indoctrinated me into voting labour, when you read about a cronically sick ex nurse getting her benefits stopped b y this government, then commiting suicide after years of dedicated service to helping sick people,it is very easy to make my mind up to vote labour. The tories and anyone who support them are sick-minded individuals who are beneath the contempt of decent minded people of this country .

Why should we be surprised - Tories are totally adept at taking credit where its not due but shifting the blame when it suits.
Wharton is typical Tory material - jumps on any local bandwagon until it runs up against what his party wants - then he has a rethink and always votes with what his whips tell him.
Thankfully, like most of his party's MPs outside the South, he is an endangered species and will no doubt be migrating in that direction after 2015.

Projected cost of new multi-storey car park for Darlington rises to £7m
Why don't DBC contact Sainsburys, they must know a thing or two about carparks after they did such a great job in Victoria Rd.It shouldn't be too difficult, I'm sure Bill or Ada could pick up that thin on their desks called a telephone, or they could actually leave the town hall and walk round or am I just being silly suggesting such drastic action!!You've got a laugh. Hogworth seems to be under the impression that the leader of the council and the CEO will be personally responsible for the actual design of the new car park. Presumably it hasn't occur to him/her that the council will engage with organisations with experience of both designing and building car parks and that the opportunity to submit a proposal will be advertised publically. But then wild speculation, scandalous slurs and personal abuse directed at individuals, rather than anything approaching informed, rational, opinion, seems to be de rigeur when it comes to anything council related on this website.

Crisis, what crisis?
Talk about avoiding the facts - this government have had 4 years and the A & E crisis which hit last year and may do this winter is the fault of actions taken by this government.
There has to be a time when blaming Labour for everything just won't wash - I reckon we've reached it.

Hopes for UK's biggest food collection
Oh dear, people coming out of a food bank smoking ,sort of ranks alongside what the bankers ,did, as I have said before would giving up smoking solve peoples money problems ? would it undo all the unnecessary austerity imposed on the country?the tories used the recession to undo all the help poor and unemployed people have received in the past, without the jobs to go toout of spite.Labour has been pressing the government to punish and regulate the banks properly, but the tories have refused, because half their funding comes from the banks. There would be no need for food banks iff we had a government that governed for all the people, not just their friends.

"I saw some people leaving a food bank, a few bags of food in the hands and cigarettes hanging out their mouths. Obviously thought buying fags was more important than buying food."
As food banks are not held in the open air, it would be illegal for them to be in a food bank collecting food with fags in their mouths and I'm sure that the food bank volunteers wouldn't allow them to smoke indoors whilst collecting their food.
I'll hazard a guess that loan_star has never been anywhere near a food bank, never mind witnessing people coming out smoking. Given a few more supportive comments, I guess that he would elaborate and say that they were balancing a crate of booze on their head and pulling a 50 inch plasma TV with Sky box behind them on a trolley whilst on their way to the airport for their bi-annual holiday to Spain, all on the taxpayers expense of course.

No David , Are people on low wages or unemployed supposed to live like monks and nuns to keep people like Loan Star ,and people like you happy, the government and their supporters want to distract people from how innefective their government is,so they have to make people in need seem undeserving of help,it only goes to show up the governments failure to improve the countries fortunes. Given the countries problems ,I thing it would be very hard for people with money problems (caused by the banks wrecking of the economy) to consider giving up smoking ,or drinking, worry tends to make you drink and smoke even when short of cash.
