Obviously Paul Sykes smells an opportunity to make himself richer. From a trade perspective UK should remain in EU but immigration must be addressed.

Changes to council services are inevitable Darlington councillors warn as the budget cut debate begins
Sammy111 wrote: In response to diga and darloresident the majority of those things you mention are capital items of expenditure and come from separate pots of money ie capital receipts or capital grants which can't be spent on the revenue budget. It's the revenue budget that needs to reduce by £13.8m so come on a few more suggestions that are going to make a big dent in that budget. It's not easy because if it was do you not think that it would already have been done.Ok Sammy: Charge non Darlington residents more for using Dolphin Centre. Increase revenue streams in Dolphin Centre,Central Hall and all Council owned facilities where possible. Create and market a heritage trail for the Home of the Railways Go back to using South Park for events where the public pay to attend. Use the Market square every week for diverse commercial events where the promoters pay the council to host them. Independent and transparent review of all council provided services with a view to cutting out duplication and or waste Scrap the Council Magazine - a newsletter would suffice. Stop spending money on court cases and appeals you cannot win. There have been over the last few years numerous examples (Sainsburys expansion, bollard in Duke St etc..) Cut Council attendance allowances Stop protecting from competition the shabby Indoor Market and allow the big guns into the town (ie 7 years ago when Tesco were keen to come to town) Allow and encourage more commercial sponsorship of selected council services (Parks, recreation are good examples) I could go on - but you get the idea Sammy??? Any commercial venture would be actively pursuing other revenue streams and not contemplating Doomsday..

The recession was not forecast by anyone until it hit in 2007/08. This has led to a huge increase in the need for advise surrounding benefits. Coupled with the predicted population increase throughout the UK people must acknowledge this has to be done. Well done DBC

This issue is like red meat thrown to the militaristic, authoritarian, xenophobic wing of the Tory far right whilst the rest of us don't give a toss. September's Ipsos Mori poll shows that EU membership does not rank in the top ten issues concerning voters, compared with 25% citing the economy. Even the Ukippers cite immigration and the economy as more important than the EU. Still the heart warming truth is that the far right are happy to tear themselves to shreads over this issue. The downside is that despite all their protestations of patriotism they would happy to see the North become an employment wasteland to satisfy their irrational hatred of all things beyond the Channel. Fortunately it will not come to that. The CBI has spoken, and when the CBI says jump, the Tory leadership say "how high". One way or another the Tories, (or Labour if it comes to that) will fix it so that we remain in Europe.
