A late Shaun McCartney try handed Darlington Mowden Park a vital 13-10 win at Fylde – keeping them in second place before Saturday’s home game with leaders Coventry.

Fylde may be bottom of National League One, but gave Mowden a stern test after a win over Bishop’s Stortford the week before.

Fylde were on track to complete an upset for long periods, in Mowden’s lowest scoring game of the season.

Thomas Grimes opened the scoring for the hosts in the first half, racing away after latching on to a cross field kick. That proved to be the only score in a tight first 40, with Mowden not rewarded for some bright attacking play.

The visitors then dominated the territory and possession and narrowed the deficit after 60 minutes. Second row Joe Craggs finished in the corner after a period of pressure.

But Fylde extended their lead to 10-5 five minutes later through an Alex Dolly penalty.

The momentum swung once more shortly after, as home full back Tom Carleton was yellow carded for a tip tackle. Warren Seals slotted the penalty to narrow the gap to two points, before a grandstand finish.

Shaun McCartney broke clear on the right wing and finished smartly to put Mowden ahead for the first time.

DMP Sharks recorded their first victory of the Tyrrell’s Premier 15s season with a 24-38 win over Gloucester-Hartpury.

Saturday’s double header at the Northern Echo Arena sees the men face Coventry at 2pm before the ladies play Richmond at 4pm. Supporters can enjoy two games for the price of one, with adult tickets £10 and U16s free.
