DARLINGTON MOWDEN PARK have signed South African winger Brandon Asher-Wood for the remainder of the National One season.

The 24-year-old, who was a member of this year’s South Africa Sevens Academy squad, moves to The Northern Echo Arena from South African club side Hamilton SP.

The winger, who can also play at full-back or scrum-half, is a former team-mate of Mowden’s Warren Seals, and took part in his first training session with new colleagues this week.

“I was blown away by the professionalism of the club and the welcome I received from everyone involved,” said Asher-Wood. “The facilities are world class, and it’s evident that everyone is passionate about what they’re doing.

“I’m really excited about my future here, and it’s been an absolute honour to be part of this brand. I look to give nothing but my best, on and off the field, to become not only a better player but a better person too.”

Asher-Wood will hope to be involved when Mowden look to maintain their 100 per cent start to the season in tomorrow’s game at Birmingham Moseley.

“It is good to have Brandon on board,” said coach Garry Law. “His versatility will be the main strength we look to utilise in this squad. He can play back three and cover nine as well.

“We have had good reports from contacts in South Africa and the attributes he has should fit in nicely with our vision on how we want to play at Mowden. There is now a fierce competition for places throughout the squad, which is only a good thing.”
