LOCK Chris Wearmouth scored on his 200th National League appearance for Blaydon, but it was a mere consolation as they lost 41-12 at Ampthill.

The Bedfordshire club have won their first two games in National One and took their chances far better than Blaydon, who struggled badly at the line-out.

The pack otherwise held their own and earned a penalty try to make it 7-7 after 25 minutes, but Ampthill opened a ten-point lead at half-time and added four more tries. Blaydon's best spell was in the last quarter with Wearmouth scoring after 65 minutes. They took the chance to blood teenage forwards James Orritt and Callum Chick form the bench.

Former Stockton No 8 Scott Powell was Tynedale's star man in a 23-17 home win against Huddersfield in National Two North. He forced his way over for a try in opening a 10-0 lead, but it was 10-10 at half-time before Tynedale forged ahead through tries by centre Ash Smith and winger James Clark.

James Spencer's second penalty put them out of sight before the visitors scored in the last minute.

Billingham followed their home defeat in the opening game in Three North by winning 27-19 at Burnage. Switched from full back to fly half, Luke Wilson scored two tries and Martin Hopley also touched down. Peter Evans converted all three and added two penalties.

West Hartlepool are top of North One East after beating the two bottom clubs handsomely. Adding South Shields to their name has done nothing for Westoe following their relegation and after losing 41-0 away to West they have yet to score a point.

There were seven different try scorers, starting when No 8 Sam Miller drove over from a ruck. In the last five minutes before the break Peter Youll and Luke Mallinson finished good handling moves, the latter with full back Stu Waites in the line.

Jack Angus finished off a driving maul before another half-time replacement, Aaron Myers, made a break to send Adam Coates under the posts. Liam Bailey and Andrew Rollins completed the tally, with Gavin Painter adding three conversions.

West this week pay a first visit to promoted Guisborough, who bounced back from their opening day defeat by Percy Park by romping to a 62-3 win at Beverley.

The Teesside derby in Durham and Northumberland One resulted in a 28-23 home win for Acklam against Stockton.

After coming through in the closing moments to win their opening game, Stockton suffered the reverse as Acklam kicked two late penalties.

Following an initial Acklam score, Stockton responded with tries from front row forwards Alex Fraser, from close range, and Mark Conway, from a 30-metre dash. Fly half Jeremy Good converted both and also kicked three penalties.

Sloppy handling ruined several more scoring opportunities for Stockton, who will hope to bounce back this week at home to a Darlington side who have lost both their opening games.

A 32-18 home defeat by Ryton left them with only Ponteland below them on points difference, although Hartlepool Rovers have also yet to register a point after losing 23-10 at home to Durham City.

Middlesbrough are only one point off the pace but made heavy weather of winning 20-12 at home to Medicals.

The Mowden Park influence was to the fore as Barnard Castle won their D & N Two match at home to relegated Sunderland 22-14. Coaches Junior Fagalilo and Luke Monument, plus influential fly half Sam Errington and flanker Joe Larder are all ex-Mowden men Despite Errington limping off with a hamstring injury after converting the first try by winger Lucas Summers, Castle stretched the half-time lead to 12-0 when new recruit Ali Johnson burst through to score.

Sunderland scored a converted try before Tyler Claydon landed a penalty and converted his own try to seal Castle's win. Larder was man of the match.
