RICHMONDSHIRE started
the new Wensleydale Evening
League in explosive fashion as
their openers went to town on
West Tanfield's bowling attack.
They smashed 197-0 off just
16 eight-ball overs, thanks to a
maiden century for young M
Brown (102no). West Tanfield's
reply was less spectacular,
managing just 67-6 with
only A Chanderton (26) providing a fight with D Savage
(3-16) the pick of the bowlers.
Masham against Thorp Perrow
provided a much closer
battle with the result being
decided in the final over.
Masham won the toss, chose
to bat and started steadily
until M Fishburn got into his
rhythm, taking five wickets.
However,some loose bowling
allowed Masham to build a respectable
total of 109-9.
Despite losing their opener
cheaply, Thorp Perrow were
put on the right footing by a
quickfire 59 from J Shanks, including
seven fours and a six
and, aided by contributions
from the other batsmen, they
managed to take the win with
112-7 with just five balls to
spare. However D Chapman
managed 3-19 from 4.3 overs.
A run fest at Leyburn saw
them provide the shock of the
week by turning over champions
Crakehall. After being put
into bat by Crakehall, Leyburn's
opening partnership of
C Burnett (80) and I Clarkson
(24) made 89 runs before L
Haslam broke the partnership,
going onto claim figures
of 3-27, with a further 23 runs
from Barnard ensuring that
Leyburn posted a strong total
of 151-4.
Crakehall's reply began
stongly with 53 runs off the
first four overs but G Hardisty
(2-35) broke the opening
partnership by taking J Lincoln's
wicket for 44 runs. Fellow
opener A Ward went onto
a half century, but was caught
off the bowling of Clarkson,
whose 4-35 was critical in resigning
Crakehall to defeat by
12 runs on 139-8.
Middleham cruised to a
comfortable victory against
newly-promoted Richmond
Mavericks. Solid knocks from
Layfield (28) and Brown
(24no) weren't enough as
wickets fell cheaply around
them, Shields taking 4-43.
Middleham's reply was
swift, reaching the required 78
to win with more than half
their overs to spare with E
Baker making 30 and Steel
16no, with Brown again providing
the only fight by taking
2-31 off his four overs.
Relegated Spennithorne fell
short against Newton le Willows.
A strong start for Newton's
openers Price (21) and
Hodges (39) saw them exploit
an inexperienced bowling attack,
however the tide turned
with R Molyneaux taking an
excellent 3-8 off his four overs
and they managed to tie Newton
down to an attainable 93-7.
Openers Mawer (12) and
Monk (18) made a steady
start, but tight bowling from
all of Newton's bowlers, in
particular D Thompson (4-
20), made runs hard to come
by as Spennithorne made just
62-9 from their allotted overs.
Thornton Watlass got their
season off to a winning start
against Spennithorne Academy.
The Academy put Thornton
Watlass into bat and their
openers managed to grind
out runs. Their partnership
was eventually broken by
Monkman with the last ball of
his allotted overs, claiming
Kindleysides' wicket for 39
runs.
Contributions from Dyson
(24) and Nicholson (14)
helped them to 108-4, despite
Pritchard's 2-32. Even with an
impressive start from J Clarkson
(29) and P Hemsley (19),
the Academy's batters faltered
under the pressure and good,
disciplined bowling from
Nicholson (2-2) and Johnson
(3-5) saw the wickets tumble
to record a comfortable 33-run win.
The matches between
Dales and Bedale and King's
Head and Eryholme went unplayed
as Dales and Eryholme
were unable to field teams.
