GUISBOROUGH D.M.C Alan Fothergill Memorial Trial, Aislaby Quarry, Whitby, Sunday A cold, bright morning sharpened reflexes - and concentration - of the eighty riders at the Guisborough club's Allan Fothergill Memorial trial on Sunday, held at Aislaby Quarry venue, near Whitby. A real battle developed between the top four experts, just a mark separating each, JST Gas rider Michael Brown edging the win from Ian Austermuhle, and sixteen year old Pinhard Prize winner Jack Peace third and Sherco rider Tom Affleck fourth.

Conditions were slippery, but sections rode relatively easy, for these riders. Each had their chance, Affleck messing the first twisting section up for three lost, Peace lost grip on the snotty climb of seven first lap, three going astray, Austermuhle`s three went on the tight right step over rocks in the old quarry. Brown, although suffering a puncture early second lap kept it together to win by one, losing one on the difficult drop over rocks at the fifth, a couple on the awkward, slippery cambered climb of the seventh and one on the rock step exit of ten. Peace remained clear here, along with Affleck. Stephen Suddes and Richie Kendra topped the Inters with strong rides, Kendra back from a Sabbatical, showing a little rust and losing six on the first section, where Suddes lost one. Close results in Clubman A and B, Kevin Tate`s consistency seeing him through after main rival Colin Chapman fived the short sharp climb of the last section and the angled climb on seven saw many spills back down the incline, notably Ron Chapman, Richard Ward and Dan Duncan. It was left to Ian Morley to ease through to the B class win on furthest clean rule from Paul Nelson and Mark Jewell.

Middle England C.V.C. Trial, Castleside, Sunday.

Middle England CVC were only formed a couple of years ago but they are making things happen in the North East at the moment with another new piece of land last weekend, which went down really well with the fifty three local riders who turned out to sample Dean Howe which is just west of Castleside in County Durham. Away from the traditional rocky going we have up here, this course was a different animal, with muddy climbs, along with tree roots, plus a graded hill, all of which went down very well with the entry, with plenty smiles at the finish from riders on all three courses.Putting in some valuable practice for the Colmore Trial in a few weeks John Crinson worked hard in the mud all day to keep his score down to fourteen, enough to comfortably take the Expert win ahead of Gary Pears and Phil Baxter. Eleven of his total, including two fives, came in section four, where the tight turn on the grip-less bankside caught everyone for a five on the first lap.

The winner eventually mastered it on his last lap, but his winning margin was increased significantly in the sixth section where he cleaned the tree roots and steps twice, along with two one dab rides, while the competition were fiving this on every lap, except for Baxter and Stephen Bennett who both made it out on their last laps. James Harland had already started his Scottish Pre 65 preparations earlier this month, and it is paying off as he took his Triumph twin to the Clubman win on thirty four, well clear of Rob Atkinson and Scott Mayhew, on sixty three and sixty eight respectively. The first section got him off to the best possible start as he left with three on his card as the hill climb with a nasty twist took its toll, and it was similar at section four where he pulled further away, leaving here with just a further five. Adam Lynam and Andrew Rawding matched Harland's clean sheet in section five but every rider failed to get out of the next sub. Peter McIntyre pipped Billy Hewitt for the Easy Class win, after they had both finished on twelve, these two leading home a pack of no less than four riders on fifteen. Losing their marks in exactly the same three sections and a the same rate, it was down to the number of cleans to decide the winner, and McIntyre had three more than Hewitt. J Nutter was closest to sneaking the win but his five in section four put paid to his chances.
