JONATHAN Richardson set the time penalties for 199 other competitors in last Saturday’s Scott Trial on the moors above Reeth, Arkengarthdale and Marske, but his bid to win the legendary trial for the second time was foiled by multi-winner James Dabill and 2012 victor Michael Brown.

Along with Faceby’s Guy Kendrew and 2015 winner Ian Austermuhle, their game plan was to ride a fast but careful speed on the 70-mile moorland course and ride the 76 observed sections with the fewest penalties.

The plan worked as Richardson’s attack cost the Skeeby contender 78 penalties in the observed sections.

World Trial 2 champion Jack Price was second-fastest, six minutes slower than Richardson, but he also paid for his haste with a high observation score. Dabill lost half the penalty score of Price.

World female trials champion Emma Bristow joined the select few by winning a coveted Scott Silver Spoon for finishing 25th, while pre-event favourite Dougie Lampkin crashed and damaged the gearbox selector on his Vertigo.

From 200 starters, only 88 competitors were classified as official finishers. The spectator attendance was enormous and the official programme was more or less sold out within a few hours. All proceeds are donated to local charities.

SHERCO rider Olly Kendra retained his Eboracum Motor Club expert championship last Sunday after winning the sixth and final round of a successful summer series for the club.

The trial was held at their Thorgill venue at Rosedale in atrocious weather, but the steep, rocky course running in the shade of the famous old railway skirting the rim of the dale caused very little problem for Kendra.

Intermediates found it tougher going, Simon Winfield edging a good win from in-form Jonathan Frost by two marks. Edward Wainwright, clubman B winner, and Paul Nelson, clubman B over-50 winner, confounded the age critics to post best rides in these classes.

SEATON Delaval Motor Club had a tremendous turnout of more than 70 riders for their trial in memory of Harry Norman, held last Sunday in the picturesque valley above Alwinton, in Northumberland.

The planned three laps were reduced to two in consideration of the exposed observers who were suffering the cold and wet, as heavy showers between the sunshine also made for heavy going for the entry.

On the expert route, John Crinson brushed the opposition aside with just eight marks to his name, four of which went in section 11, where the entire entry struggled with the short step at the start, rather than the rock outcrop at the end cards, which was intended to be the main part of the section.

Eddie Aitkin stamped his authority on the clubman route with a total of five marks lost, which put him well clear of Steve Biggins and Gavin Brown. Rob Lowery took the easy course win on 19, closely followed home by Ray Crinson, Neil Hebdon and Angus Beston.
