SCARBOROUGH’S Michael Brown won the national Lakes Two-Day Trial at Broughton in Furness last Sunday from Welsh champion Iwan Roberts and Leyburn’s Richard Sadler.

Whitby’s Andy Chilton was placed fifth, just ahead of James Stones and Jonathan Richardson. Jack Stones was 12th in his penultimate event before jetting off to New Zealand.

Sheffield’s Darren Wasley won the strong clubman class from Belfast’s Harold Crawford and former Welsh champion Phil Houghton. Melmerby garage director Stuart Blythe rode his 300cc Beta to sixth place out of 144 starters.

SCARBOROUGH'S Callum Williamson put together a solid ride on his Sherco to win Hull AC’s Elgymn Shield trial last Sunday by a good margin from Jonathon Frost.

Held at Warren House Farm, Lockton, the trial featured a long, deep fissure which held many superb sections. But, with the weather deteriorating, it was the hillsides that took the marks.

Williamson was in his element from the off, attacking the first grassy climb and cleaning every lap. Three went on the graded hill, where Henry Jackson performed best with a great ride of just one lost.

Williamson also escaped the difficult last for 12, while others copped a maximum on the slippery climb out.

Frost fought back on the twisting, rocky gully sections of six and seven, never losing a mark, but lost ground with a double figure score on the fifth.

Mark Butler, from York, headed the A class with a consistent ride, proving by far the best on the graded hill, losing just seven, with Tom Nelson next on 12 lost. Runner-up Ray Foulkes, Karl Jenkins and Stuart Coultas also reached double figures, while Danny Gamble cleaned the third, the only rider to do so. But 10 lost on the very first dropped him down the order.

Experience often reigns in clubman B and it was no exception this time, Andrew Dale topping a strong entry by four marks from Henry Suddes. The last two sections saw the win slip away for Suddes, losing five and six marks here, while Dale cleaned.

THE Frank Goodall Trophy Trial was held last weekend, hosted as usual by the South Shields club at Rookhope, in Weardale, where 65 riders turned out.

The expert course was a low-scoring affair, so it was down to who could hold their nerve longest. Gary Pears completed his day with just one mark lost, dropped on his final visit to section three. Jack Biggins had a dab in both sections two and four on his first lap, enough to relegate him into second place, but good enough to get the better of Anthony Stephen and Richard Hawes, who finished on three and four respectively.

Experience also told on the clubman route, where winner Roger Williams went round without loss and Eddie Aitkin parted with just five to finish second ahead of youth B rider Adam Biggins.

Phil Hodgson took his Dot round the easy course for three single dabs, one fewer than Andy Walker, who struggled in section three.

STANLEY Trials Club was at Butsfield Quarry, near Castleside, last Sunday, when 28 riders plus another three on the conducted route made the start.

Jason Scott and Gary Pears went head to head on the expert course and both finished on eight marks before the tie decider kicked in to give the verdict to Scott, who went furthest clean.

Two riders opted for the green route and only two marks separated winner Steven Emberson and Keiran Daly at the finish. A single mark in section nine was all that Darren Johnson needed on his way to taking the clubman win, after second-placed David Braithwaite lost all his four marks in section 10.

Father and son Harry and Sean Craig took first and second spots on the easy course, with Mike Minns taking third, and Alex Martin finished ahead of Aaron Oliver and Grace Headley on the conducted route.

THE legendary and world-famous Scott Trial takes place in Swaledale tomorrow.

For those who do not grasp the pleasures of competing in the Scott Trial, the simple explanation is roughly six hours of physical and mental torture riding about 80 miles of moorland with pitfalls such as ditches, streams and rivers.

The rider who travels fastest and loses the fewest penalties in the observed sections is adjudged the winner.

Two hundred machines will rocket down Feldom Range, but maybe half that number will be spectating at the halfway point.

The best way to track the action is to purchase a programme. The John Moffatt production contains all the information needed for £5.
