THE penultimate event in the Class B/C/D British Youth Trials Championship ran without any problems or dramas at scenic Cogden Hall on Sunday, where 73 contenders and four non-competitive youngsters rode two separate course.

Clerk of course Greg Porter and his Richmond Motor Club stalwarts laid 12 sections which tested all classes. The weather played ball and Swaledale was bathed in sunshine throughout the day.

Cogden's shallow stream provided only five sections in the Low Meadow, where Class D started. Classes B and C were treated to a new stream section at the bottom of Grinton Ghyll, where four sections featured grassy banks.

All classes then climbed up to Grinton Wood for the major action.

Riders from Ireland, Scotland, Wales, the West Country and the home counties competed in five different age group classes.

Ulster's Josh Hanlon won Class B from Newton Abbott rider Billy Green and Lochaber's Duncan MacColl. Buxton's Harry Turner and Horsham's Jack Dance took the Class C classes.

The trial was a cliff-hanger all day and the end results more or less make all class leaders unbeatable, with only Bracken Rocks to run on October 11.

COOKRIDGE international and British trials champion James Dabill was second at the final event in the RT Keedwell British Trials Championship series at Guisborough on Sunday.

He was beaten by 19-year-old Welsh trials champion Iwan Roberts, who rode a Beta UK machine to victory.

Wallsend teenager Billy Bolt was placed eighth and Richard Sadler 13th. Birstall instructor Dan Thorpe won the expert class and the championship.

Arkengarthdale Sherco rider James Stones was a strong third, while Whitby's Jack Howell was placed ahead of Faceby's Guy Kendrew.

THE Fleetham acres at Winksley hosted Ripon Motor Club's annual Artie Ratcliffe Vase novice trial on Sunday, when a total of just 45 riders contended the event that commemorates the Bradford factory trials star of the 1950s and 1960s.

Guiseley's Sam Jennings, riding his Montesa, shared the top place with Yeadon's John Lydamore.

Quite a number of riders sampled the clear, cooling river waters. One notable was Patrick Darbyshire, who ditched his pristine RTL Honda.

The last three hazards were on the run back, with the penultimate section in the river in case anyone missed the chance of a bath in Hencliffe. Notables in the aquatic class were Neil Wright, Olympic standard no less, Darbyshire and Peter Fleetham.
