THE Ripon club staged the fourth trial in the Acklams Beta summer championship series at White Wood Farm, Bewerley, on Saturday evening.

The 12 classes featured some youngsters who had contested the British Youth Championship trial at Dob Park.

Elliott Laws grabbed third place in the youth easy course category after taking fifth place in the championship event. His father Chris had enough energy left after running the three championship laps, tracking his son, to take second place in the over-40s at the Ripon trial.

Youth ruled the novice class, in which Boroughbridge teenager Bevan Blacker excelled to beat Gary Thwaite and his brother Aldis Blacker. The veterans also rode to win, with Tony Calvert and Richard Thorpe topping their respective classes.

Pateley Bridge schoolboy Jack Harker opted to ride an elderly Suzuki in the twin-shock class and managed to beat Michael Platts and his pristine TLR Honda.

BETA rider Andy Chilton was in spectacular form on Saturday, winning the popular Guisborough DMC Dales Trophy Trial at Fryup from fellow Beta rider Jack Howell and Tom Affleck.

Owing to a clash, the club had changed the date of the trial and was rewarded with an entry of 70 riders and glorious weather.

Starting at Ellers Farm, with extra land added, a two-lap, 20-section course was plotted by inspirational clerk of course Dave Lees.

The Montesa marque ruled a strong clubman A entry, Mark Shearer holding on for the win after the experienced Trevor Willans – way down the results after a terrible first lap – produced a tremendous last lap of just six lost, by far the best of the day.

Paul Nelson, from Glaisdale, almost snatched the clubman B class win, falling just three marks short of winner Darren Johnson as Dave Wardell held on to third place.

GLAISDALE'S Paul Nelson and Jon Walsh could not be split at Eboracum MC's third easy trial at Whin Hill Farm, Leavening, both finishing with a clean sheet.

Nelson rode a 50-year-old DOT machine, but Walsh matched him all the way. The slippery beck and muddy rooted incline had riders footing, but youth B winner James Wright and Peter Coverdale, returning to the trials scene, coped well. Coverdale finished third and Trevor Jones and John Chamberlain proved age is no barrier to riding trials as they competed well in the adult easy class to finish in that order.

Thorgill's Mark Myers posted a good result to stay ahead of Kieran Sharp, with Jamie Sharp taking youth D easy.
