SCOTTISH teenager Joe Dawson was a surprise winner of the national Mintex Trophy Trial on Sunday, the unique youth time and observation trial run by Richmond Motor Club on the bleak Swaledale moors at Hurst, near Reeth.

Dawson, from Fife, set the best score on observation, losing a mere 13 marks for 60 sections, and set the fastest time of 2:57.09 over 60 miles of challenging moorland.

Sam Johnson ran a close second on time, while Truro’s Toby Martyn will remember his efforts for many years to come. The Cornish national star had opened his account with an astonishing first lap, arriving at the final section at 11.07am after overtaking 49 other competitors. Whitby’s Chester Adamski, starting under number two, was next at 11.11am, then Keiran Child at 11.13am.

Johnson was predicted by many to set the pace, but he was down by seven minutes, just ahead of Dawson.

Martyn appeared on the second lap at 1.40pm – in a cloud of steam. The RCM Beta had expelled its coolant just below the penultimate section. The vapour cloud could be seen from a distance of a quarter of a mile.

Only 30 riders out of 50 starters completed the course.

At the awards function, clerk of course Nathan Stones reported that the trial had gone to plan and thanked all the competitors and the many officials who patrolled the entire course, as did the Swaledale Mountain Rescue Team. Michelin again presented tyres as part of its support for the unique mini-Scott Trial.

STANLEY Motor Club recently held a trial at Dursand Quarry, above Stanhope, where more than 50 riders turned out in bitterly cold and windy conditions.

Michael Phillipson and Colin Ward both lost one mark on the expert course, with Phillipson taking the win after going furthest clean.

Dursand Quarry was again the venue for North-East Centre riders, this time run by the Durham County Trials Club, and the popular course attracted another healthy entry of more than 60 competitors.

Michael Phillipson waltzed the expert course, but the challenging course worked him hard all day.

Round two of the Stanley Motor Club Wednesday Evening Series saw another trip to Butsfield Quarry, off the A68, for clubman and easy riders. Travis Ward and Gareth Martin could not be separated on the clubman route, each completing the course without loss.

EBORACUM MC staged its second Wednesday night easy trial at Forrest Farm, Warthill, and James Pashby secured an impressive win over Hull AC's James Austermuhle by just one mark, with Tim Charlton third.
