THE league concluded on Saturday, and while Unicorn FC were celebrating a league and cup double, Hawes Gayle had a different reason to crack open the champagne.

Matthew Sedgewick became the toast of Gayle after his brace saw them end a run of 79 consecutive league defeats, with a combined goal difference of minus 802, as they 2-2 draw against Carperby Rovers.

Their previous league point had come against Askrigg United in March 2010 and that had been their first since a 2-2 draw, again with Carperby, on the final day of the 2008-09 season. Despite the celebrations, however, Gayle still finished bottom of the league again, 14 points below Askrigg United.

Hawes United ensured a third-placed finish after they rounded off their season with two wins last week. A week last Wednesday, a goal from Jonathon Champion gave them a hard fought 1-0 victory at Richmond Town Academy, before they beat Catterick Garrison Football Centre 4-0.

After a goalless first half Andrew Fagg and Scott Guy put Hawes in control, while late goals from Darren Bell and skipper Matt Dinsdale sealed the points.

Richmond Mavericks finished sixth after a 6-2 home success over Redmire United.

A goal from Dave Muir was all that separated the sides at the break but a second half hat-trick from Scott Fenney along with efforts from Dez Clarke and Dan Johnson sealed the points. Phil Sharpe and Ash Ryde replied for Redmire Spennithorne and Harmby had to be content with seventh place this season after they ended an inconsistent year with defeat at Reeth and victory over Catterick Rovers.

A week last Wednesday, goals from Joe Woodall and Steve Bainbridge were enough to give Reeth the points, despite a first half strike from Spenny’s Ian Clarkson, while goals from Barry Harker, James Smith and Carl Burnett, who also missed a penalty, gave Spenny a 3-2 home win over Rovers last Saturday.

Nathan Morris and Luke Mc- Cormack scored for Rovers.
