Stockdale praise for Collett
FORMER Darlington goalkeeper
David Stockdale has paid tribute
to ex-Quakers custodian Andy
Collett for the role he has played
in his move to the Premier League.
Weeks after agreeing to join
Fulham, Stockdale this week officially
swapped League Two life
for the Premier League.
Stockdale earned the six-figure
move thanks to a string of impressive
displays last season in
which he kept 21 clean sheets, but
he says Collett, Darlington's goalkeeping
coach, played an instrumental
role in his development.
Twelve months ago Stockdale
was considered a reserve and he
said: "Andy's had a massive role
in the transfer. It's all thanks to
him really and I'll be disappointed
to leave him behind.
"He's good enough to work in
the Premier League, he knows
that, and this transfer is going to
look good on his CV.
"Andy Oakes has been phenomenal
for me too, and Dave
Penney stood by me throughout,
even when maybe I should've
come out of the team.
"Andy has been great for me
and without him maybe I would
not be going to Fulham."
Stockdale departed on a low
note as Darlington lost on penalties
in the play-off semi-finals at
Rochdale where the keeper received
a fitting send off from the
travelling fans at Spotland.
He added: "It was a nice moment
when the fans were singing
my name, but it wasn't the moment
I wanted to leave on. The
moment I wanted to leave on was
winning at Wembley.
"I was lost for words and so
were the rest of the team. We battled
away for the play-off games
and it came down to a penalty
shoot-out. Is there any justice?
"A penalty shoot-out is a lottery.
But I suppose that's how it
is, that's football."
