Quakers renamed "Darlington 1883"
12:40pm Monday 25th June 2012 in News
By Joe Willis, Regional Chief Reporter
RENAMED: Darlington 1883
THE Quakers will be called Darlington 1883 next season, the club has announced.
The club has been forced to find an alternative playing name to Darlington FC by the Football Association (FA) after losing an appeal last week.
Owners Darlington FC 1883 said they had planned to hold a comprehensive poll to allow as many fans as possible to put forward their opinions.
However, a last minute deadline meant a new name had to be submitted today.
Fan polls were arranged by DFC 1883 and The Northern Echo last week which showed the most popular names were Darlington AFC and Darlington 1883.
After receiving guidance that Darlington AFC could be rejected, the board chose Darlington 1883.
Laura Drew, DFC 1883 director and part of the team that attended the appeal, said "We ended up in a position where we had to make a decision more or less on the spot, and this isn't the first time that has happened due to factors outside of our control.
“It was vital to us that the fans had some say in the new playing name of their team and Darlington 1883 was very popular in the polls that we received.
“Following the appeal hearing we were told that a new name would need to registered ‘sooner rather than later’ but it was only midday on Saturday when it became clear that we needed to confirm the name today. “The FA required us to differentiate from the previous playing name which incidentally was simply 'Darlington' as per last season's FA handbook and the use of 1883 has been adopted and broadly accepted by the town to reflect the history of the club as well scoring well in the polls."
Interim board chairman Denis Pinnegar added: “The open day at Bishop Auckland on Saturday was an excellent day and it was great to see so many fans looking forward to the new season.
“Deciding on the new name was a close run thing between the two final choices but Darlington 1883 demonstrates the great history of our club which is very important to us.
“We are disappointed that the poll could not run its course but the deadline placed on us at the last minute of Monday morning has to be adhered to. Now its all about preparing for the new season which we are all looking forward to."
Craig McKenna, DFC 1883 project director, said the board was getting used to making decisions at the last minute.
“It’s not something that we enjoy or encourage and this one is particularly frustrating as the fans were coming forward in their numbers to give their opinions.
“I am confident we have a playing name that will prove popular with the fans although I do think there will be some who will be critical.
“We tried to initiate a process where the fans would have the final say on the new playing name but the unbelievably short notice of the deadline has meant that we have had to take the feedback we had at hand and make a decision from there.”
He added: “This is an exciting new era for this football club and the 400 plus season tickets sold on Saturday show that the Darlington FC fans are still 100 pre cent behind the football club."
Club officials had hoped a plea for leniency to the FA would see the Quakers allowed to keep their name as well as playing in the Evo-Stik League and national FA competitions next season.
However, following a crunch meeting at Wembley Stadium last week they came away disappointed on all counts.

What smoke screen do you refer to? If you have any specific questions you would like to put to 1883 then do so.
I will give Morgan1 one piece of credit, he took the time to email me many times. He has never been ignored, nor ridiculed. Nor was he right however.

d with them by ignoring THEIR rules which are in all THEIR handbooks ?.. were they prepared to make an exception for Darlo, if so more time would have been available so fans could have been informed and voted accordingly ? I have been involved in football administration at a much higher level than where Darlington now find themselves and I just feel that somebody albeit accidentally because of inexperience, is making a hash of things on a far too regular basis. If you don't agree, then fine, but I trust you will be able to understand my point of view, just as I think Morgan 1 was right, we agree to differ.

Laura chased all day Friday for clarification on guidelines on the name and the time frame to submit it. She received the info on Saturday lunch time that they wanted it on Monday morning. I have no idea what working hours the FA keep, I have had plenty emails from them outside usual working hours so I suspect they do work on Saturdays also. The email Laura received came from Durham FA anyhow. It was the FA who recommended we didn't use the AFC. I don't understand your sentence starting "would the Durham FA....." if you clarify I would be happy to respond.
If you are so experienced in football admin at such a high level and feel we are so inexperienced it is a real pity you didnt feel willing or able to step up and offer your assistance to us.

"1883" was a very popular choice on the polls which were able to be initiated quickly.
For example, my favoured option was CFC but that didn't get a lot of support so wasn't taken forward.

Then you need to use The NE to get your message across, there are lots of people out there probably have no way to access your method of donation but also suspicous donating without a clear purchase of a share, and in which company, and to what say it gives them, because the share structure of the 1883 club has not been transparent and identifed publically.
Some still see it as the fans providing there hard earned cash for those that run it, rightly or wrongly this perception has not been dealt with. (I could be wrong but I am sure that not all involved are doing everything for free)

please stop wasting your time trying to get through to these people. No matter what you say they will try to twist because they want the club to fail.
To anyone who wants to knock the board of 1883 all I can say is I have had various contact with 2 members of the board on various occasions and different matters, and they have always responded quickly and openly.
Doonhamer, will you please give some detail as to the level you worked at in football and the posts held? It is totally amazing that you do not know the FA can be contacted on a Saturday, if for no other reason than league results, bookings, sending off's etc have to be reported asap to your league, and then passed to the fa by said league secretary.
I personally have in the past had regular contact with the FA due to posts held at Walsall Wood, Stratford Town, Wellsbourne Town, Moor Green, and Corby Town, and have yet to hear ANY football secretary or other person involved with them saying they have ever had clear precise instruction at the first time of trying.
I say to you once again, instead of knocking the board offer your services to the club and board. If you do indeed have prior contact with the FA via a post within the game I am sure they would love your input and help, also the contacts within the FA you are sure to have made.
The time has come to stop the knocking, complaining
,and just plain S*** stirring and either get behind the club or go elsewhere. You say you are a fan, if so please start to show it. Either offer some fact to back what you say or keep quiet.

Craig, you do me an injustice as I have been right on the newco issue, the club name issue, the league position issue and some comments were not tested by you so I cant be right or wrong and some will need the passage of time but I am confident in my experience.
I was also right on the NE issue over 2101 votes for the club name only 14% for a name with 1883 in it, 6 times more people voted than are in the CIC, and 5 times more than purchased season tickets. 780 wanted Locomotive Darlington and 667 Darlington AFC and this was all know before the deadline.
Darlington 1883 I personally totally dislike sounds like a convict, but that is only my opinion.
However this is all water under the bridge now.
With respect to ego's I can only say that this is totally irrelevant my comments, be they positive or negative are there to stimulate active debate to allow those who have to make the decisons the benefit of observing peoples mood, reaction and hopefully help them make better decisions.
Craig I am sure we will all learn of your fee when the accounts are published in the correct way hopefully the club can do this which is something that past owners have failed to do to meet their legal obligations of submitting on time accounts to companies house. (unless you want to tell us)
The most important issue that has come out of all of this, is the knowledge gained from using the NE for a poll on the clubs name, and that is, that there are at least 2101 people registered readers of the NE that have an interest in registering a vote.
It is up to the club to engage thes people rather than ignoring them, so that they become members of the CIC, buy season tickets, turn up on match day to support this new club, a lot remain on the fence and need to be encouraged back, but this knowledge is truly valuable.

Did you miss the article printed in the NE by the NE that pointed out that the NE poll was hijacked by naughty fans of other clubs.
Of the top two options we didn't have the time to test whether the FA would accept "AFC" leaving "1883" as the logical name to be used.
My personal preference was for "CFC" but it wasn't popular with the fans who voted.
I completely and totally refute the allegation that we are ignoring anyone.

2101 people have voted but they were certainly not all Darlington supporters. Locomotive Darlington is a ludicrous name for a football club and my guess is many of those who voted for it were just having a laugh at the club. 400 people have turned up at an open day at Bishop and bought season tickets putting their money where their mouth is and supporting the club. These are the real supporters and more will follow, this is a site for trolls, self proclaimed experts, and people who want to make fun of the club. Lots of people are not sitting on the fence, they are supporting the club which is still the Quakers I have always supported whatever you or the FA say. You are in a very small minority.

I have not had access for a few days, if that is the case then that is quite sad because it would imply the fan base is not as large as is hoped for, I guess time will tell.
Maybe the word listening would have been better, there were certainly a lot of comments about Shildon, decison taken and money wasted.
The important thing is decisions are being made and things are moving forward the club simply has to live and deal with bad decisons , so long as it can keep moving forward.
The next twelve months will likely be an interesting rollercoaster of emotion, for better or for worse.

Just because the decisions taken are different to the ones you would have taken do not make those decisions bad and your suggestions right.
We listen to all comments we are aware of, and the majority of them conflict the next. Whatever decision is taken there will be comments that support it and comments that disagree with it.
Thats the nature of the beast and we have got used to this and take all decisions in good faith and without personal agenda and after serious consideration of all the facts and potential consequences.
You are very blinkered to your own opinion and your posts can appear every so slightly arrogant in the respect that you are right and anyone who disagrees is wrong.
We have invited you to discuss these things further on many occasions and again, if you would like to meet with the interim board and offer assistance or ideas this can be arranged. You have declined this offer before, instead choosing to air opinions on here instead.

Morgan 1 is an attention seeker who likes to feel he is important. His main idea that 1883 should have been set up as a investment opportunity paying dividends to investors was ludicrous - I don't think there are many if any football clubs which work on that basis, certainly not in non league circles. For the record I think you and your team did a great job keeping the club alive when all seemed to be lost and the new CIC that emerges will be stronger and better than anything we have had in the past. Successful football clubs at the grass roots operate at all levels bringing youngsters up through the ranks. Some turn out more than 200 players every weekend at all ages from under 10 to adult and have an outstanding record of fining new talent. I'm sure that is the future and in Martin Gray I think you have the right man for the job. There are many people on here who like to kick a club when it is down and won't offer anything positive just criticism and innuendo. Well done for standing up to them, they certainly won't come out into the open and stand up to you.

I have followed this saga in the NE, on the local TV news and in these columns It is blatantly apparent that there is much passion and feeling on both sides. However, I do have a question or two which, I hope, can be answered truthfully and, perhaps, dispassionately.
On the TV, and Reading the NE, it appeared to me that a great deal of money (£100k I think) was paid to "buy" Darlington Football Club. If the club is now not Darlington Football Club, and is not allowed to be, was this money returned to those who spent it? I hope so as this would be a good springboard for the new club's finances. If it was not returned, what happened to it?
When the 'new club' made arrangements to play at Shildon but were subsequently not able to do so, did this cost the fledgling club money it could ill afford or was the deal "written off"?
Many respondents have alluded to playing once again at Feethams. I was under the impression this land had now been given over to development and planning permissions have been lodged thus negating any such move. Is this correct?
Some of my family love football but they never seem to talk about The Quakers, it's always the big name clubs - even though they rarely go to see them live. So, how does a local club attract a fan-base sizeable enough to sustain it in the face of wall-to-wall coverage of the big hitters?
I ask these questions not to inflame or annoy but so I can make sense of something that is happening on my doorstep that I can't seem to get a grasp of.
There has been a fair amount of vitriol posted on here which is not necessarily constructive. Perhaps some of this is because of the lack of validated information available.

Cards on the table: I know precious little about football.

Feethams is now a dead duck as housing will shortly be built there.
Yes, the premiership has taken over and it is very difficult for the smaller clubs to compete with the TV. What the smaller clubs must offer is a better value matchday and all year round experience, a community experience. When I started watching Blackburn in my younger days I didn't care what division it was but it just felt like my club When they won the premiership, I didn't love the club anymore or any less - it was the same community club. I am hoping Darlington can bring football back to the community even remotely. How many premiership fans genuinely feel they are truly engaged with their club and it is good value for money? My own view is that football at all levels will return to its roots otherwise the industry will simply implode like rangers because of debt.

I couldn't agree with you more that a return to grass roots would be a good move for sport in general. It seems to me (as a football outsider) that the big football clubs are primarily a business and the football is a by-product.

War with the FA wrote:Yes, a fine example of what can be done. Both Chester and Halifax are striving to do the same at this moment in time. But one very, very important point, although Darlo, like the aforementioned clubs are hopeful of maintaining their fan base, the big difference is that they all stayed at their home grounds. Optimisim is fine but consider this, The Northern League Title is won next season, followed by The Evostik First, Premier then Blue Square North in the following seasons. Four years and theoretically we are knocking on the Conference Premier door again. Where do you imagine our "home" ground will be then ? A return to the Arena would be pointless, fans just don't want to go there. Feethams is dead and buried. No ground share, unless it was with the Boro, as nobody else in the area has a ground anywhere near the standard required. Only one option left, build a new ground in Darlo. The money required to run a successful side to achieve the aforementioned success would be phenomenal, so to try and finance a new ground as well would be impossible. This IS NOT negativity but stone cold realisim. The fact is Darlington will probably never have a Football League team again. A strong non league outfit in a few years time is the best anyone can realistically hope for unless a lucky fan wins the Euro millions and builds a stadium, then we'd just about have gone full circle back to the days of GR. Interesting to see what others think of the long term prospects, especially those who seem to think we'll be back playing in Darlington in a year or two.
Good news for Darlo fans... the same thing happened to Aldershot town (Check out Aldershot Town, Wikipedia)... and they are back in the football league. Moreover their fans stuck with them. A random selection of their crowds from their first season in the football wilderness shows gates of 2,436, 2,873, 2,382, 2,164.

Since then, it has evolved massively. Fans have grouped together to pay goalkeeper's wages (ironically the same Chris Porter who has just signed again for us!), they group together each season to sponsor various players (early figures suggest that at least 3 players will be sponsored this season), and finally they even organised a 'last meal' whip round for the players who hadn't been paid for months which eventually topped out at around £5,000.
It was never formed to be an 'alternative supporters group' it's just evolved over time.
