AN Inverness-registered fishing boat was last night ''taking in

water'' in huge seas off Shetland.

Shetland coastguards scrambled a helicopter based at Sumburgh, and a

Lerwick lifeboat was launched to go the the aid of the trawler Ardency,

foundering 10 miles off the island of Bressay in Force 12 winds.

The coastguards described conditions ''as horrendous,'' but added that

the Ardency was in no immediate danger. She is expected to be taken

under tow, and arrive safely in Lerwick. Water was being pumped from the

trawler, which has a six-man crew.

Meanwhile, a crippled Latvian factory ship adrift off Shetland was

expected to be taken under tow, although the salvage tug Smit Lloyd 121

was still 10 miles away.

The Darius, with 151 crew, was heading for Ullapool on Saturday when

engine trouble was reported 10 miles off Shetland, near the island of

Foula.

After speaking to Shetland coastguards, the vessel decided not to call

for any help in removing the crew.

Last night, Pentland coastguards confirmed that crew members of the

Smit Lloyd 121 were preparing to attach a line to the Darius, battered

by westerly storms, as she drifted from Orkney towards Shetland.

The vessels' positions were given as 30 miles north of Westray,

Orkney, and 40 miles south of Foula.
