LENNON, Noah, and Harvey have made their way into the top 100 most popular boys names for the first time in Scotland, while Sophie becomes the favourite girl's name, according to findings released yesterday.

Lewis claimed the top spot for the third year in a row for boys, but last year's girl's favourite, Emma, fell into second place.

Jack came second in the boys category, while Callum climbed seven places to take third position. For girls, Ellie and Amy stayed in the third and fourth places respectively.

The highest climbers in the top 100 names were Noah and Ruby, according to the registrar general.

Unique names given to babies this year included Aanus, A-Jay, Blessing, and C.

Duncan Macniven, registrar general for Scotland, said around 26,400 boys' and 24,700 girls' names had been registered. "More than 5800 different first names were chosen this year and around 1500 boys and 2200 girls were given unique names, " he said.

Mr Macniven added: "Daniel and Matthew both moved up two places to make the top 10, replacing Liam, down four places to 11th, and Ben, down four places to 12th."

He said Ewan and Jake leapt into the top 50, and Noah, Lennon, and Harvey had joined the top 100 for the first time.

Mr Macniven added: "For girls, the name game was fairly static. The only new entrant to the top 10 is Rebecca, up two places to ninth, replacing Hannah, down one place to 11th.

"The biggest climber was Ruby, which climbed 70 places to reach 43rd."

Mr Macniven said: "Names to drop out of the top 100 altogether were Jonathan, Jason, Hamish, and Patrick, plus Charlie, Danielle, Alexandra, Kelsey, Stephanie, Chelsea, and Caitlyn."
