Seven wins from their seven games remaining are required if Darlington are to win the title, believes manager Martin Gray.

Quakers hold a slender advantage in the title race due to having a game in hand – to be played on Tuesday at Northwich Victoria - and superior goal difference.

But they are three points adrift of Salford City, and Gray does not expect the leaders to drop many points during their remaining six fixtures.

“We need seven wins don’t we,” said Gray, whose team won 5-1 at New Mills on Monday. “That’s what I believe. We can’t afford to lose a game because I can’t see Salford getting beat.

“We’ve got seven games and we need seven wins to win the title.

“It’s all to play for, but we’ve got to put Monday’s second-half performance in over 90 minutes.

“Saturday at Warrington will be hard again, but we’ve come out of Monday with lots of confidence.”

The next week could prove crucial in both clubs’ title aspirations. Salford face Scarborough and Spennymoor Town, two clubs in the play-off chase, and thereafter have four fixtures with teams in the bottom half of the table.

Darlington face Northwich (3rd), Droylsden (9th) next week, but first up is tomorrow’s tricky trip to tenth-placed Warrington, whose manager Shaun Reid, who this week made his ill feeling toward Quakers quiet clear.

However, Gray responded by saying: “We really respect Warrington.

“They’ve had some good cup runs this year, and that proved that they are capable of beating anybody.

“The FA Cup run probably got in the way of their league form, if it wasn’t for that they’d be in the play-offs.

“They can cause any team problems on their day, they’re one of the best teams in the league and have a well-respected manager.”
