No respite as Magpies put Quakers to the sword

Notts County 4 Darlington 0

DARLINGTON took another thumping as they crashed 4-0 at big-spending Notts County last night.

Quakers boss Steve Staunton made five changes from the side crushed 4-0 last week at home by Morecambe and although there was a marginal improvement in performance, the changes made no difference to the scoreline as Quakers crumbled to an early onslaught.

Staunton was left angry by the first half which saw Notts County 3-0 up after only 17 minutes.

Although a determined Darlington made a fight of it after the break, they looked on course for defeat from an early stage.

“There were positives in the second half but not in the first half,” said a frustrated Staunton.

“For 20-25 minutes we were all over the place, every time they went forward they looked like scoring.

“I can’t work out why because we have worked on the defensive side of the game for three or four days.

“It seems to take us until we are two or 3-0 down before we play with any meaning, any purpose.”

Keeper Ashlee Jones was one of three debutants – alongside Paul Harsley and Danny Hall – but he endured a nightmare first appearance as he was partially responsible for the first and last goals at Meadow Lane.

He conceded three inside six first half minutes, the first coming in the 12th minute when he rushed off his line but completely missed a Notts County through-ball.

That allowed in Lee Rodgers to tap into an empty net and two minutes later Lee Hughes added a second.

The former West Brom striker headed home Craig Westcarr’s right-wing cross at the far post and any hope Quakers had was extinguished just three minutes later.

At the end of a swift counter-attack Rodgers crossed for the unmarked Ben Davies to tap home to make it 3-0 and spell a ninth defeat in ten away games.

Ironically, it was Darlington who had had the first shot on target. After being played in by Jonathan Hogg, Mor Diop’s effort was easily saved by keeper Kasper Schmeichel.

Thirty seconds later and Rodgers had opened the scoring and thereafter the Magpies were in control.

Staunton’s changes included Danny Groves at right-back, in place of Corey Barnes, plus debutants Paul Harsley and Danny Hall.

Hall, playing at a ground where he was sent off last season, came close to reducing the first half arrears when headed narrowly over on 50 minutes after meeting Jeff Smith’s corner as Darlington showed some fight.

Schmeichel made two good saves in quick succession, from Smith and Harsley, before Staunton sent on Lee Thorpe.

Darlington did manage several second half raids into opposition territory but didn’t possess the quality required to break down an experienced side which could have scored more if they hadn’t taken their foot off the pedal.

But with ten minutes to go came the fourth with Hughes adding his second with Jones again at fault.

He needlessly attempted to collect a Magpies throughball on the edge of his own area that Hughes beat him to before executing a fine lob to complete the scoring.

Quakers have now conceded 13 goals in three games and further misery for Darlington came courtesy of Torquay who, third bottom before last night, won 3-0 at home to Cheltenham.

FAO... Please Please Mr SINGH, sack staunton now. he is clueless in his team selections, training methods etc. the man is a complete plonker. now we all no why he got the sack from the irish national team job. he is playing players out of postion. the team is letting in more goals now, than when todd was in charge. the chairman has given the manager money to bring in players of his choice and they are worse than some of the players already at the club. it seems to me the players are lacking a leader on the pitch(foster was/is a massive loss) and a manager, that does not know what he is doing, off the pitch. I think Mr SINGH should be our new manager, at least he will put some fight into the players, get them motivated and organised. Mr SINGH can not be any worse than staunton. time for a change...NOW. i can do a better job than staunton and am serious. the team/club can fight off relegation, there is still time because the teams above us are not too far away.

Yet another debacle!!! Until Darlo become a cohesive unit instead of all this chopping & changing & new faces on the team they are never going to achieve the wins they need to avoid Blue Square. They must be feeling very demoralised & a team without heart needs decisive leadership. Stop nitpicking & let Foster play.

Oh how we have fallen in the last year, from play-offs, thinking of automatic promotion to this freezing cold night with several frozen, static players.Desperation was the word last night, more new faces desperate to fill the void, then after 20 mins , players desperate to get back to there own clubs. Staunton , we are down, so give me"my team" to shout at, cajole, barrack, not these desperate loanees. Please, Please!

What's Mr Ellesnere Port got to do with it? Top class team there!
It's simple, until or unless the owner puts in place an experienced lower league manager and invests heavily this will turn in to a disaster.
Even the most optimistic and loyal fans have had enough of this farce.
I hate to say this being born and bred in Darlo but invest or close.

And now poetry corner.

A little ode for Mr Staunton.

"He said the loan signings fit the bill
But on Tuesday night we lost four nil
The training went well but it was still a rout
Soon we will be shouting Staunton out!!!"

I know its not Keats or Shelley but its not bad for a first attempt

A couple of pointers TOONDOONSOUTH firstly you quoted my tag name wrong - its Dee Zelastra, Secondly you even spelt it wrong. Finally - say Dee Zelastra quickly 3 or 4 times and then work out the significance of "Ellsemere Port" -- anyway, moving swiftly on, I said what I did about DFC purely on the grounds of the CONSTANT media attention, often for the wrong reason, also HOW MANY TIMES has this team been made insolvent?? and lastly -- take a look at the position of the league tables - a SAD SAD situation and a far cry from the days of the likes of Cork and Speedie eh?

Oh God... what went wrong? We've had good teams, average teams and rubbish teams, but this seems too awful for words. I hate to say it, but we're down. Let's hope we survive and can rebuild in the BSP.
