Darlington enjoy fifth successive win

Darlington and Stockton Times: GOAL HERO: David Dowson GOAL HERO: David Dowson

Darlington 1 Bamber Bridge 0

A goal from David Dowson was enough to give Darlington their fifth successive league as they beat Bamber Bridge 1-0.

And for the second weekend in a row they ended the opposition's long unbeaten run.

Bridge came into the game second in the table and on the back of a 15-game undefeated run, but Quakers moved up a place to fourth after winning what was a dour game ruined by a blustery wind at Heritage Park.

The conditions meant chances were few for either side, though Bridge keeper Steven James had to save a first-half free-kick from an otherwise subdued Stephen Thompson.

Darlington’s play-maker, who scored a cracking goal when Darlington won 3-0 at Bamber Bridge in August, was unable to make the difference on a day when the wind it tough for both sides.

Quakers stuck with the same XI that won last weekend 4-1 at Warrington Town, who had not lost in 17 matches, when Dowson scored the first two goals, and it was the former Sunderland striker who broke the deadlock today too.

On the hour, he kept his cool to convert from 18 yards, his only scoring opportunity of the day, when Jonny Davis played a precise pass to put the forward in one-on-one situation.

Bamber Bridge piled on the pressure in the closing stages and there were some anxious moments for Martin Gray’s men, especially during six agonising minutes of injury time during which the visitors twice forced corners.

But once Mark Bell claimed a cross from the second of those set-pieces, Darlington knew the points were in the bag for the fifth successive game.

Their next game is next Saturday at Burscough, though they have a friendly at Heritage Park on Wednesday against a Sunderland XI.

Goal: Dowson (60, 1-0)

Bookings: Mahoney (27, foul), Waddecar (78, foul)

Referee: Shaun Hudson (Houghton-le-Spring)

Attendance: 973

Darlington (4-3-1-2): Bell; Pilatos, White, Hunter, Galbraith; Robinson, Davis, Scott; Thompson (Hopson 75), Dowson (Fisher 70), Purewal. Subs (not used): Jameson (gk), Weldon, Edwards

Bamber Bridge: James, Mahoney, Hastings, Lawlor, Alexander, Kay, Reid (Bowyer 74), Thompson, Bell (Watt 54), Waddecar, Marlow. Subs (not used): Bonaminio, Williams, Buchan

A great result in difficult conditions. Bamber Bridge really made a game of it - you can see why they were second in the league - so it was a relief to hear the final whistle, and for Darlo to get another 3 points in the bag.

It's looking good for this season now - play-offs at least! Looking forward to Boxing Day - hopefully there'll be a great crowd there....

im sorry but i have just been informed that the towns football club is to be located at Blackwell meadows, i find this shocking, first of all what will south park look like on a match day with a thousand empty beer cans and fornication in the bushes on a summers night after a win , where will dog walkers go now ! the traffic is serious as it is , will the council get off there fat backsides and look at the problem with parking and dogging in the south park area? i think these issues need to be addressed.

I enjoy nothing more then fornication in the bushes after a convincing win, you should have seen me yesterday behind kfc in bishop. Nothing excites me more then a Dowson goal!

I have come to the conclusion that if Darlington FC won the lotto and donated the money to charity someone would moan about.

Wilfie, be est assured the football ans will not be in the SP on a summers night celebrating another Darlo win, I be surprised if nyone goes n there after dark due to the "surprises"some dog walkers leae behind!

As for fornicating yesterday behind KFC, I find diffecult to beeave as the wind chill factor was about -40.

The club is doing a lot of great work for the local communitee, why can people just be happyand get behind the club!

So there are already problems with parking and dogging in the south park area even before the football club move nearby? It must be all these dog walkers that are the problem then!

This is a football club related article, not a means to raise your political issues with the council over dogging and car parking issues in the South Park area. Neither of these are in anyway related to either the Rugby Club or Football Club. If this proposal goes ahead, the ground will include a purpose built car park.

Now to more important things:
Yesterdays win was another massive result against a very strong Bamber Bridge team, who came into the game in great form. It was not a classic to watch, but that was mainly because of the horrendous windy conditions which seem to be associated with Heritage Park. Chances were rare for both sides but the goal when it came was a peach. The through ball from Jonny Davis was perfect and Dowsons finish was top class. All of the team, again gave 100% with Jordan Robinson named Man of the match, but for me they all gave man of the match performances. Finally lets all give Stevie Johnson a good send off on Wednesday night, please show your support for a top man. Last season he scored some important goals for Darlo, which helped get us promoted.
