Saturday’s washout at Warrington saw Darlington fall further behind the leaders as Salford City took advantage of Quakers’ lack of activity.

They won 3-1 at Scarborough Athletic, recovering from going a goal down early on, to create a six-point gap, although Darlington now have two games in hand with the first being a crunch clash tomorrow evening at promotion rivals Northwich Victoria, whose match at Kendal was also postponed.

Saturday’s trip to Warrington was called off at 10.20am following a downpour that left large pools of standing water on the Cantilver Park pitch.

It was the seventh postponement of Quakers’ weather-disrupted season. The fixture has been rearranged for Tuesday, April 21 (7.45pm), the final week of the season.

This evening Spennymoor Town can go level on points in second place with Darlington, who hold a better goal difference, if they win at New Mills.

Moors hold a good record in midweek matches this season, and manager Jason Ainsley knows his team is firmly in the play-off hunt.

He has also paid tribute to Darlington and the club’s supporters, saying: “We are not competing with Darlington. They have a fantastic fan base but there are not many getting four or five hundreds in step four or five. Apart from FC United, we are much of muchness with most teams in the higher league.

“Nobody has taken any points off us on a midweek barring Darlington. We have lost the least amount of games along with Darlington, we have the most clean sheets. We tick a lot of boxes, but we need to make sure the next few games we are in a play-off hunt.

“As a wage bill we are comparable to them. We had trouble raising finances for the clubhouse, they have got the finances for the new ground. I have nothing but admiration for the Darlington fans because if it was not for them they would not have a club. I have respect for them and we are trying to compete with them.

“I would never have thought Spennymoor would be sold out for a game in the Northern League, that was for Darlington.”
