Martin Gray says Tom Portas’ fitness is a factor in his fine displays in Darlington’s midfield.

The summer signing from Whitby has made an immediate impact in the centre of the pitch, with his use of the ball and willingness to take possession making him one of the team’s better performers during the opening weeks of the season.

He impressed Gray during Wednesday’s 1-1 draw with Farsley, and Gray said: “Tom Portas was outstanding.

“His use of the ball, his energy and ability to sense danger were all evident on Wednesday and he had a great game.

“He looks strong and I’ve been delighted with him. He came into pre-season a bit late because of having a few holidays, so he took his time to get going.

“His fitness now looks to be at a good level and that’s showing in his performances.”

Portas has not missed a minute of Darlington’s eight games so far, and is sure to play again on Sunday against Blyth Spartans in the FA Cup.

The first round qualifying tie at Heritage Park kicks-off at 3pm with admission £9 adults, £6 concessions and £4 children. Season tickets are not valid.

Parking will be available on a first-come, first-served basis for a donation to the club.
