10:57pm

Anyone else out there bored rigid by the Michael Owen saga? He's just tweeted "Nothing to confirm just yet, will be an interesting few days now that the transfer window is closed."
Thanks for that Michael......

10:28pm

Joey Barton (finally) seems to have completed his exit from English football and signed for Marseille

10:19pm

10:17pm

James Coppinger - once of Darlington, Newcastle and on loan at Hartlepool - has moved from Doncaster to Nottingham Forest, linking up again with his old Donny boss Sean O'Driscoll.

He's also signed Billy Sharp on loan from Southampton.

10:15pm

Confirmed - Dempsey signs for Spurs. Can't help but feel this transfer window has left Liverpool weaker.

Spurs signing a proved goalscorer like Dempsey for £6m is great business. Another one linked to Liverpool - Yossi Benayoun - has gone to Spurs on loan from Chelsea.

10:03pm

Tottenham look to have won the battle to sign Clint Dempsey as he is reported to be having a medical with the White Hart Lane club.

5:40pm

Liverpool and Spurs have both lodged bids for Fulham Clint Dempsey. It's late in the day - but finally we've got a good old-fashioned transfer tug of war.

Here's one to watch as well - bookies have slashed odds on former Newcastle striker and serial racehorse owner Michael Owen to join Celtic.

5:16pm

Swansea City have broken their transfer record to sign Valencia winger Pablo Hernandez for £5.55m.

With the switch sealed, they'll not be pursuing their long-standing interest in Middlesbrough's Marvin Emnes.

3:49pm

3:48pm

3:47pm

Two more big transfers confirmed - Dimitar Berbatov has joined Fulham from Manchester United on a two-year deal, and Manchester City have signed defender Maicon from Inter Milan.

Still very quiet in the North-East though, with Sunderland the only club to have done any business so far.

2:55pm

Quick recap on the main things to have happened so far:

* Sunderland have sold Kieran Richardson to Fulham for £2.5m but signed Danny Rose from Tottenham on a season-long loan

* Stoke have signed Charlie Adam from Liverpool

* Rafael van der Vaart has left Tottenham to join Hamburg

* Scott Sinclair has joined Man City from Swansea

* Nigel de Jong has left Man City to join AC Milan

* Clint Dempsey has turned down an offer from Aston Villa

* Liverpool have made a bid to sign Chelsea's Daniel Sturridge on loan

2:11pm

1:52pm

Jermaine Jenas will not be joining Sunderland. Discussions broke down at an early stage, presumably because the Black Cats were not willing to match Jenas current earnings at Spurs and the former Newcastle midfielder was not willing to take a wage cut.

1:51pm

Alan Pardew has just spoken to the press and confirmed that Newcastle's business for the summer is complete.

Pardew said: "The targets we have are impossible today. We will go with what we've got. We'll look at it in January.

"I'm hoping (our) business is done. We have kept our main players intact and that was our main priority."

1:46pm

On the Jordan Henderson front, Liverpool have been looking at ways of moving him on. There was talk of a player-exchange for Clint Dempsey, but the Wearsider was reluctant to move to Craven Cottage.

Still think he would be ideal for Sunderland. If they can fund the deal, I think Liverpool would probably want around £8-10m.

Henderson would be ideal option in the centre of midfield for Sunderland alongside Lee Cattermole. Alternative options to Jack Colback and Seb Larsson.

There's nothing on the cards at this stage, but personally think it  would be a terrific move by Martin O'Neill on top of the signings of Adam Johnson and Steven Fletcher.

1:08pm

Another completed transfer is the switch of Charlie Adam from Liverpool to Stoke City for £4m.

1:07pm

DEAL DONE: Sunderland confirm the arrival of Danny Rose on a season-long loan from Tottenham Hotspur.

The 22-year-old, who was part of the Great Britain squad at the Olympics, is a left-back who can also play in left midfield, and effectively arrives as a replacement for Kieran Richardson, who joined Fulham for £2.5m this morning.

I am more concerned that Darlo or Newcastle will sell someone than if they sign someone. They both have great squads for their respective divisions.

12:50pm

The Europa League group stage draw has just been completed. Newcastle United are in Group D with Bordeaux (France), Club Brugge (Belgium) and Maritimo (Portugal).

12:20pm

Manchester City have confirmed the signing of Scott Sinclair from Swansea City as the replacement for Adam Johnson, who joined Sunderland last week.

12:14pm

Middlesbrough have released an official tweet revealing that they do not expect any incomings or outgoings today. Perhaps Keith Lamb took his fax machine with him when he left for the FA....

11:58am

11:43am

11:37am

DEAL DONE: Sunderland confirm that Kieran Richardson has joined Fulham for an undisclosed fee. The former England international has signed a three-year deal at Craven Cottage, bringing to an end a five-year stay in the North-East.

11:29am

Away from the transfer action, a quick reminder that Newcastle will discover the identity of their Europa League group stage opponents when the draw takes place in Monaco in about half an hour's time.

11:26am

11:26am

11:25am

11:25am

11:07am

It's very unlikely Hartlepool will be involved in today's scramble - Football League clubs can still sign loanees and non contract players after tonight's 11pm cut off point.

11:05am

11:04am

Hatem Ben Arfa can breath a little bit more easily next time he goes to Manchester City - enforcer Nigel de Jong has just completed a permanent move to AC Milan. Or as they have to be called in all self-respecting sports reports, 'Italian giants AC Milan'.

10:51am

One transfer completed away from the North-East: Liverpool midfielder Jay Spearing has joined Bolton Wanderers on a season-long loan.

10:50am

Messi spotted in Barcelona boarding a plane bound for Newcastle.

But then again could he do the job that Ryan Taylor does ?

10:47am

For now though, here's where we're at with the North-East clubs:

Newcastle - Never say never. Outgoings are unlikely, but with Mike Ashley continuing to insist that every player has their price, a big-money offer for Cheik Tiote, Fabricio Coloccini or Yohan Cabaye could yet spark some last-minute action. Incomings? Unlikely, although there's a desire to secure some cover for Ryan Taylor, who suffered a serious knee injury against Atromitos last night.

Sunderland - Danny Rose is expected to complete a season-long loan move from Tottenham shortly, and talks are also under way with Spurs midfielder Jermaine Jenas. Fulham's Clint Dempsey is not expected to arrive though - he's holding out for a move to Liverpool and his club have accepted a bid from Aston Villa.

Middlesbrough - Swansea look to have ended their interest in Marvin Emnes, so it's likely to be a quiet day on Teesside. Boro's Championship status means they still make loan signings once the transfer window has closed. Similarly, they can sign up free agent Andre Amougou, who has been training with them this week, at any time.

10:43am

10.30am: Here we go then transfer-deadline day. Have you seen Mathieu Debuchy flagging down a taxi at Newcastle Airport? Is Danny Rose eating fish and chips in Seaburn? Could that be Mido loitering behind the bike sheds at Boro's Rockliffe Park training ground?

We'll  be around all day to let you know what's going on - get in touch with your best rumours or alleged sightings.

Darlo got what they needed today an extra central defender, and a possibility of yet another forward. It must be tiring scoring so many goals, so we need to rotate strikers.

These two will make up the numbers while others in the squad either get themselves match fit, or take a hike.
