ELEVEN anti-nuclear activists opposed to Britain's Trident nuclear submarines were arrested yesterday by Ministry of Defence and Strathclyde police during a series of protests at the Clyde naval base, Faslane.

A MoD spokesman said five people were arrested at 4.30am as they attempted to cut their way into the base. All were charged with malicious mischief. Four were released, but one was detained by police investigating outstanding warrants.

Later, another four protesters were arrested outside the main gate of the Royal Naval Armaments depot at Coulport. Three were charged with breach of the peace and released.

Then, two women - one of whom was in a wheelchair - were arrested and charged with breach of the peace. They were later released.
