THE Scottish Conservatives are set to launch a high-powered bid to woo the Scottish business and financial community with the announcement of a raft of business-friendly policies and the setting-up of a new liaison unit, writes Frances Horsburgh, Scottish Political Writer.

Tory leader William Hague will listen to Scottish business leaders' concerns at two private meetings to be held during the Scottish Conservative Party conference which begins in Glasgow on Friday. He will also launch the Scottish Business Liaison Unit, which is part of the party's national Listening to Britain exercise.

Among the organisations which will be represented at a breakfast meeting on Saturday with Mr Hague and deputy leader, Peter Lilley, are the Royal Bank of Scotland, the Clydesdale Bank and ScottishPower, as well as the CBI and the Institute of Directors.

The Scottish Tories are clearly very anxious to highlight their pro-business credentials in the face of recent moves by the Government to court the business community with the setting-up by the Scottish Office of the Scottish Business Forum.
