  • Darlington v Warrington - Evostik Division One North
  • Padiham v Padiham - Evostik Division One North

4:55pm

Hartlepool 0 Bury 2

Three successive defeats to start the season for Pools. Little cheer around Victoria Park.

4:54pm

West Brom 2 Sunderland 2

All over, and Sunderland have drawn 2-2.

That was a thoroughly entertaining start to the season, and a draw was probably the right result with plenty of attacking action at both ends.

4:45pm

West Brom 2

Sunderland 2 (Larsson 85)

An equaliser for Sunderland - and it's another lovely goal.

Gomez releases van Aanholt on the overlap, the full-back pulls the ball back, and Larsson casually side-foots home from ten yards out.

Game on again.

4:40pm

West Brom 2 Sunderland 1

Last throw of the dice for Sunderland with Altidore coming on to replace Brown. They're pretty much playing 3-4-3 now.

4:34pm

Hartlepool 0 Bury 2

Horrible slip by Bates gifts Bury a second. Captain tried to play the ball back to Flinders, but didn't get anywhere near enough on it.

Rose in one on one and knocked in.

4:34pm

West Brom 2 (Berahino 74) Sunderland 1

Sunderland fall behind, just as they looked to be in the ascendancy.

Dorrans fired in a long-range shot that was parried by Mannone, and after Brunt chipped the ball back across goal, Berahino surged on the outside of a dawdling van Aanholt to stab home his second of the game.

4:26pm

West Brom 1 Sunderland 1

First change for Sunderland as Gomez replaces Rodwell. The £10m summer signing has tried hard enough, but he hasn't looked match fit and was unable to offer too much in an attacking sense.

4:25pm

Hartlepool 0 Bury 1

Harewood - now bustling and showboating - scored..... but he was offside for Pools. Probably Pools best spell this, trying to get forward and using the ball better

4:18pm

West Brom 1 Sunderland 1

Fletcher has the ball in the net for Sunderland - but it's rightly disallowed for offside.

Cattermole chipped a cross into the box, Brown flicked the ball on, and Fletcher was a yard offside as he headed home at the back post.

4:12pm

Hartlepool 0 Bury 1

Scare for Pools there. Holden and Franks lost the ball between them, Bury broke and Lowe hit the bar from 18 yards.

4:11pm

West Brom 1 Sunderland 1

Sunderland create the first chance of the second half - but it goes begging.

Larsson's corner evades everyone, but Wickham volleys it wide at the back post.

That's three good chances Sunderland have had now - and they've only taken one of them.

4:04pm

West Brom 1 Sunderland 1

Back under way at the Hawthorns, with no changes to either team.

4:01pm

West Brom 1 Sunderland 1

Sunderland fans might not like to see this, but here's Saido Berahino rolling home West Brom's equaliser from the penalty spot:

Darlington and Stockton Times:

3:48pm

West Brom 1 Sunderland 1

Half-time, and it's all square.

The penalty appeal against Sunderland was an extremely soft one, with Roberge taking only the slightest of tugs at Anichebe, but it's hard to argue against West Brom being level on the run of play.

Cattermole's screamer gave the Black Cats the perfect start, but they've been second best pretty much ever since.

3:43pm

West Brom 1 (Berahino pen, 42) Sunderland 1

West Brom equalise as Berahino rolls home from the penalty spot.

It was a very soft penalty award though, with Roberge being penalised for a tug on Anichebe as the striker turned in the box.

3:41pm

Hartlepool 0 Bury 1

Best chance for Pools missed. Pools broke forward, Parnaby's shot was saved, pushed out as far as Harewood, who blasted wide from about eight yards.

3:40pm

West Brom 0 Sunderland 1

Vito Mannone produces his first save of the afternoon as he tips Gardner's rising drive over the crossbar.

West Brom starting to build up a head of steam now - Sunderland just need to get to the break with their lead intact.

3:36pm

West Brom 0 Sunderland 1

Here's the moment Lee Cattermole fired Sunderland into the lead at the Hawthorns:

Darlington and Stockton Times:

3:32pm

West Brom 0 Sunderland 1

Sunderland just missed a great chance to double their lead.

Larsson delivered a deep free-kick from the left, but despite being unmarked at the far post, Roberge headed wide from eight yards out.

Big chance gone begging.

3:32pm

Hartlepool v Bury

Bury playing 3-5-2 today, extra man in midfield, extra man at the back against two strikers.

Harewood has been involved, but he's tightly marked. Austin the busiest player in a blue and white shirt, playing centre-half today.

3:23pm

West Brom 0 Sunderland 1

West Brom are having a spell where they're dominating possession, but O'Shea and Roberge are in sharply to close the Baggies down.

Summer signing Pocognoli tries his luck from distance, but his long-range strike flashes wide of the right-hand post.

3:20pm

Hartlepool 0 Bury 1

17 minutes in, former Pools loanee Daniel Nardiello heads Bury in front from close range.

After Pools had - and wasted - their first opening when Holden picked out a Bury defender in the box, the visitors broke at speed.

A cross towards the back post found Nardiello who wasn't going to miss.

3:19pm

3:19pm

West Brom 0 Sunderland 1

Things have settled down a bit after Cattermole's bolt from blue, with Sunderland working hard to try too gain control of midfield.

Cattermole's having a great game defensively too, although West Brom just delivered two dangerous corners into the middle that Mannone didn't look too comfortable with.

3:11pm

West Brom 0 Sunderland 1

That's a dream start for Sunderland, and for Cattermole, who is currently the joint top-scorer in the Premier League!

It was one of those that was in from the moment it left his foot - a great strike.

Meanwhile, Craig Dawson has just become the first player booked after going straight through Steven Fletcher on the halfway line.

3:08pm

West Brom 0 Sunderland 1 (Cattermole 5)

What a start to the season that was.

Sunderland lead through an absolute thunderbolt from Lee Cattermole.

Larsson delivered a free-kick, Brown headed the ball across the area, and after Olsson cleared, Cattermole controlled the ball and lashed a 25-yard drive into the top right-hand corner of the net.

Super Lee Cattermole...

3:04pm

West Brom 0 Sunderland 0

Dangerous early West Brom break into the area, but the threat was snuffed out as Cattermole and Brown denied to thwart Berahino.

Bright start from the hosts though, with Sunderland only really settling now.

3:00pm

West Brom 0 Sunderland 0

We're off and running at the Hawthorns - and the selection surprise is that it's Wes Brown starting at right-back, with Valentin Roberge at centre-half.

2:51pm

West Brom vs Sunderland

A sold-out away section is in really good voice here at the Hawthorns. You can't beat the optimism that is apparent at the start of the first game of the season - let's hope it's still as strong at the final whistle.

2:49pm

When Louis van Gaal was dreaming about his first match as Man United manager, it's safe to assume things didn't pan out as they have today at Old Trafford.

Gylfi Sigurdsson's second-half strike secured Swansea a 2-1 win over Man United - and ensured the van Gaal era has started in the same manner as the David Moyes one ended.

2:37pm

2:37pm

2:36pm

West Brom vs Sunderland

The atmosphere is building at the Hawthorns, with Sunderland's players on the pitch going through their warm-up drills.

Interesting to see Danny Graham back in from the cold on the substitutes' bench - underlines the need for attacking reinforcements with or without Borini.

And with Roberge having to slot in at right-back, there's no natural defender on the bench. That's another area that needs strengthening ahead of the closure of the transfer window.

2:34pm

Hartlepool United v Bury

More changes for Pools today. After a 4-3-3 at Port Vale, it's back to 4-4-2. In come Holden at left back with Austin moving to the middle in place of Collins.

Parnaby starts in midfield, Brobbel on the bench. Woods is a sub, Harewood starts. No place in the squad for Compton.

Hartlepool: Flinders; Duckworth, Bates, Austin, Holden; Parnaby, Miller, Walker, Franks; James, Harewood. Subs: Dixon (gk), Collins, Woods, Brobbel, Hawkins, Richards, Smith.

Bury: Lainton; McNulty, tuttel, Etuhu, Adams, Hussey, Lowe, Nardiello, Soares, Cameron, Mills. Subs: Jalal (gk), Rose, Mayor, Sedgwick, Thompson, Widdowson, Poole.

Referee: Gary Sutton (Lincoln )

2:13pm

West Brom vs Sunderland

Gus Poyet has named both Steven Fletcher and Connor Wickham in his starting line-up for Sunderland's opening game of the Premier League season at West Brom.

The striking dup have both made the starting XI, although Wickham is expected to line up on the left-hand side as Poyet sticks to the 4-1-4-1 formation he fielded last season.

Vito Mannone gets the nod ahead of summer signing Costel Pantilimon in goal, with Valentin Roberge forced to line up at right-back in the absence of injured duo Billy Jones and Santiago Vergini.

Lee Cattermole has been selected for the holding midfield role ahead of Liam Bridcutt, with Jack Rodwell making his senior Sunderland debut ahead of him alongside Seb Larsson.

West Brom include former Sunderland midfielder Craig Gardner in their starting selection, with another ex-Black Cat, Stephane Sessegnon, named on the bench.

WEST BROM (4-2-3-1): Foster; Wisdom, Dawson, Olsson, Pocognoli; Mulumbu, Gardner; Dorrans, Berahino, Brunt; Anichebe.

Subs: Myhill (gk), Baird, Yacob, Ideye, Davidson, O'Neil, Sessegnon.

SUNDERLAND (4-1-4-1): Mannone; Roberge, Brown, O'Shea, van Aanholt; Cattermole; Johnson, Rodwell, Larsson, Wickham; Fletcher.

Subs: Pantilimon (gk), Mavrias, Bridcutt, Gomez, Buckley, Altidore, Graham.

Nothing wrong with the Sharp goal - he tapped in after Mejias spilled Tonge's shot from range - but Boro will be hugely miffed that Adomah's goal was chalked off. Don't think either side deserved to win it, but it looks like being a maiden victory for David Hockaday.

2:02pm

Williams on for Tomlin.

Luke Williams ready to come on for Boro

1:57pm

Leeds United 0 Middlesbrough 0

Yikes. Clayton's shot was blocked and cleared up the pitch, where fellow debutant Damia Abella miscued his pass back to Mejias and his Spanish compatriot only just made the clearance. Shaky.

1:53pm

Leeds United 0 Middlesbrough 0

Leadbitter and Friend go into the referee's book for fouls. 13 minutes left of normal time.

1:50pm

Leeds United 0 Middlesbrough 0

Nsue comes on for Adam Reach.

1:45pm

Leeds United 0 Middlesbrough 0

Emilio Nsue having a word with Aitor Karanka, looks like he'll be Boro's next sub here.

1:42pm

Leeds United 0 Middlesbrough 0

Both teams struggling to match the intensity of the first half here. Thinking for the first time that this game could end goalless.

1:41pm

West Brom vs Sunderland

Middlesbrough are battling away to try to keep their winning run going at Leeds, but in terms of the Premier League, it's just over an hour and a quarter until Sunderland kick off their new season at West Brom.

It'll be interesting to see whether Gus Poyet goes with Connor Wickham or Steven Fletcher up front - or whether, as he has been hinting, the Sunderland boss changes formation and goes with two up front.

Elsewhere in the Premier League, Ki Sung-Yueng, who spent last season on loan with Sunderland, has opened the scoring as Swansea lead Manchester United 1-0 at Old Trafford.

1:35pm

Leeds United 0 Middlesbrough 0

Adam Clayton comes on for Dean Whitehead. Boos ringing out at Elland Road.

1:32pm

1:25pm

Leeds corner, cleared by Friend - but Mejias came racing off his line. He's prone to the odd rush of blood to the head is the Boro keeper.

Lovely chance for Boro. Adam Reach finds Grant Leadbitter whose reverse pass to Albert Adomah sees the Ghanaian in on goal, only to be denied by Stephen Warnock.

Two minutes added on here.

12:56pm

12:50pm

Leeds United 0 Middlesbrough 0

Heck of a racket here at Elland Road. Leeds have woken up a bit and have looked pretty good in the last five minutes or so.

12:48pm

Leeds United 0 Middlesbrough 0

Two chances for Leeds since Boro's ghost goal - volleys by Bianchi and Byram in consecutive minutes are saved and missed respectively.

12:47pm

12:46pm

12:43pm

Leeds United 0 Middlesbrough 0

Boro have had the ball in the net but it has been disallowed. George Friend's long throw bounced in the area and Albert Adomah acrobatically volleyed it home. Think it might have been a high foot. Possibly. My view was obscured by a pole.

12:37pm

Leeds United 0 Middlesbrough 0

The game is 20 minutes old but only feels like five minutes. Decent pace to it. One real chance of note - Billy Sharp's second minute foray into the Boro box, but the visitors have looked stronger.

12:33pm

12:24pm

Leeds United 0 Middlesbrough 0

I haven't had a chance to see Kike before now, he looks a real handful. Not afraid to get stuck in which, in this league, is essential.

12:21pm

Leeds United 0 Middlesbrough 0

Early chance for Leeds, after about 70 seconds in fact, when Billy Sharp, on his debut for the club, is played through and Tomas Mejias comes out to clear. Nicky Ajose's shot on the rebound is cleared off the line by Daniel Ayala.

Moments earlier, Lee Tomlin and Jason Pearce were involved in a bit of a disagreement - the Leeds skipper could afford a bit of a kick at the Boro midfielder without the referee doing anything about it.

Could be a feisty one.

12:08pm

Leeds United v Middlesbrough

Boro fans in fine voice to my right here in the press box. They've travelled well, despite the £34 tickets. Fair play to them.

11:52am

Leeds United v Middlesbrough

Our work experience lad was feeling all warm and fuzzy about Middlesbrough this week, so much so that we made him channel his warmth and fuzziness into this Talking Point about his beloved team.

Darlington and Stockton Times: Middlesbrough FC

11:47am

Leeds United v Middlesbrough

If Kike scores today, he will equal a record set in 1919. I didn't know that. But Scott Wilson did, because he wrote this about Reuben Butler.

11:45am

Leeds United v Middlesbrough

Did you know that Leeds United head coach Dave Hockaday is from Sedgefield, and used to go to Boro games as a nipper? No. Neither did I. But Scott Wilson did, because he wrote this about the new guy at Elland Road.

Darlington and Stockton Times: REPLAY: David Hockaday's side face Newport tomorrow night

11:42am

11:40am

Leeds United v Middlesbrough

Team news is in! And there's a debut for Damia Abella who will play right-back for Aitor Karanka's side. Adam Clayton is on the bench, while Kike bids to make it three goals in three games for his new side.

Leeds United: Silvestri, Byram, Pearce, Cooper, Warnock; Murphy, Bianchi, Austin, Ajose; Sharp, Doukara. Substitutes: S Taylor, C Taylor, Wootton, Tonge, Cook, Poleon, Smith.

Middlesbrough (4-2-3-1): Mejias; Abella, Omeruo, Ayala, Friend; Whitehead, Leadbitter; Adomah, Tomlin, Reach; Kike. Substitutes: Konstantopoulos, Husband, Williams, Clayton, Nsue, Fewster, Woodgate.
