RICHMOND TOWN advanced to the next round of the Monkwearmouth Cup with a 3-1 win over Annfield Plain last Saturday, despite having eight first-team players being unavailable.
It was all Town in the opening 20 minutes, with the visitors not troubling a well-organised defence. Scott Ryan and Chris Pattison down the wings were causing the opponents’ full backs all sorts of problems with their pace.
Chances were created but it was the visitors who went one up on 36 minutes against the run of play.
This spurred Richmond on, though, and in a five-minute spell before half-time they could have gone 3 -1 up.
Fingertip saves by the Annfield Plain goalkeeper denied first Ben Darville and then his brother Liam. Another Liam Darville shot flew inches past the post before Scott Ryan blazed over with only the keeper to beat.
On the stroke of half-time Town equalised through Ben Darville.
Having calmly rounded the keeper, his shot hit the upright, but he was well-placed to slot the ball home from the rebound.
Liam Darville gave Richmond the lead when he fired home on 70 minutes, and he teamed up again with his brother with five minutes remaining to make it 3-1.
Richmond Town have been drawn at home to Seaton Carew in the next round.
