Darlington end year-long hunt for Hunter
Chris Hunter last night became Darlington's third arrival of the week, the defender joining from Shildon a year after manager Martin Gray first tried to sign him.
He follows Paul Robinson and Chris Moore in signing this week, with Gray moving quickly since the end of the season to make new additions.
The manager is relieved to secure the signature of Hunter on a two-year deal, a player who has played at right-back and centre-back.
"We tried to bring him in last year, but he had an agreement that he would stay with Shildon for another year so that tells you something about him," said Gray, who expects to make at least one more signing this summer.
"He's been loyal to Shildon and we're very appreciative to their manager, Gary Forrest, for being co-operative in allowing Chris to sign for us.
"He's got an opportunity to play football at a higher level and Shildon have been good in allowing him to come to us.
"I've seen Chris on numerous occasions during the season and always been impressed. I know Craig Liddle looked at him when Darlington were in the Conference.
"He played in the US when he was doing a scholarship over there and he comes highly recommended. A lot of people rate him very highly so he's another high quality signing for us."
While Gray has made three additions this week, Adam Nicholls is to become the fourth to exit since the end of the season.
The winger is to join Crook Town, who are one of his former clubs. They have just been promoted from Division Two and are managed by former Darlington defender Gary Pearson.
Meanwhile, Stephen Harrison, another of those to leave since the final match of the season, has rejoined Durham City where the right-back previously spent four years.
He said: "I was devastated to leave Darlington as Martin Gray and his team of staff have been fantastic to me. I have left a truly awesome football club who have tremendous fans, quality players and brilliant staff. I genuinely wish them well for next season."
Durham will host Darlington in a pre-season friendly on Friday August 2 (7.30pm).
